Looks like it would be great for people needing its features.  But why are there connectors and screws jutting out from the sides?  Needs a bit of a physical design makeover, to my mind.

A Nagra LB on steroids

thats about right. Nice looking box, I reckon it would be $3k minimum though.

Why would you need them? they add to the distortion.

The Nagra VII has the same mic. pres. as the Nagra VI and those were transformerless, the transformer in the VI was for dynamic mics.

- in the video it was stated that the vi and vii have the same mic amps.
- the vi supposedly has input transformers for use with dynamic mics.
- there were no transformers present as far as i could tell from the video (maybe i missed them).

so if there are not in fact any input transformers then it would be inaccurate to say that they share the same mic amps. well i suppose
you could make a case that it is accurate, but it would be misleading.

Actually, the transformers could still be there.

Looking at the video it seems that there are two PCBs with a space between them - so the transformers could be there.

Sennheiser 418s>SDMixPre-D>RO9HR
Beyer MC930>Fostex FM3>NagraSD
Couple of Schoeps CMT441 too.

Stream audio over cellular, wifi, isdn, Ethernet

Touchscreen color display (IMO all modern recorders should leverage this)

I am sure there will be other differences as well

Side connectors are ideal to run the unit upright in a bag like this...

Don't want it.

Buttons can be operated by feel alone.  Touch screens cannot.  Buttons can be operated in total darkness, or without opening the bag for more than a hand. Touchscreens cannot.  No use for color.  Buttons don't mess up your screen with fingerprints.  Etc.

Touchscreens are also far more suseptible to accidental button presses.

However, I bet the Nagra implementation is well thought out with all critical transport functions implemented via their standard rotating switch (now an electrical switch, but the design is held over from the era of mechanical transport controls), a design which is less suseptible to accidental switching than even hardware buttons.

Other manufacturers racing to add touchscreen functionality to their products concerns me more than Nagra's implementation.  I can see the value of touchscreens for easier access to information screens and perhaps control of non-critical settings while recording, but no tranport functions please.

To each his/her own but I love the touch screen functionality on my hs-p82

I agree that a touch screen shouldn't replace all functions but it definitely helps during setup

Also after running a color display I can't ever see myself going back to black and white

I suppose like most things new and noticable it will easily find its way equally into frustrating counterproductive and distracting gimickry, and smartly done, functionally benefitial operational advancements.
