Sony PCM D50 continuous reboot loop
« on: October 20, 2013, 11:57:55 AM »
Hello
I'm having trouble with my Sony PCM D50. I left the gear unattended beside an open window for a few mins while recording a storm this afternoon. The rain blew in and the Sony got damp, though not very damp. Since then, it won't boot: when I turn it on, I get the word 'SONY' as usual, but it then goes straight to the 'See you!' message that you get when you turn the machine off, and then restarts. The cycle repeats until I remove the batteries.
Does anyone know if it's possible to perform a hard reset on these machines?
I know that the problem is my own stupid fault, but I dearly love my D50 and I'd be very sorry to have to replace it.
Thanks.

Most likely a condensation/dew sensor has kicked in, take the batteries out and give it time to dry out.

From the Manual...

On handling
   • Do not subject the recorder to strong shock or vibration. Doing so may cause a malfunction of the recorder.
   • Do not place the recorder in the following locations:
      – Anywhere extremely hot. Never expose it to temperatures above 60oC.
      – Under direct sunlight or close to heaters
      – In a sun-heated car with the windows closed (especially in summer)
      – In a humid place, such as in a bathroom – Anywhere dusty

The machine has recovered. I wrapped it in kitchen paper and placed it in a bowl of rice overnight. What a relief. Thanks for the replies. I will be more careful in future.
