Sony PCM M10: mic jack noise
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:28:24 PM »
My new three week old PCM M10 has been introducing some really loud and annoying crackles and static (while in record mode) at the slightest touch of the mini stereo plug jack.  In other words, even slight rotation of the plug or manipulation of any kind (not pulling it out of the jack, of course) causes horrible static to be produced.   I'm using a Rode NT4 mic, for what that info's worth ( I don't think the mic is at fault). Have tried two different cables (both new) with no improvement.  Haven't dropped or torqued or in any way mishandled the unit.  Is this a common problem?  Thinking I have a bad jack connection inside the M10.  Thanks for your suggestions.

if its not the cable its defiantly an issue with the m10, id call up who ever you got it from and tell them, and get a replacement. thats not normal

What type of cables have you tried? Is the connectors straight mini or rtangle mini?

I purchased the unit from Amazon.  Will Amazon accept an item in return more than three weeks after purchase?  I'll need to find and read the fine print.

One of the new cables is the OEM from Rode (they sent it to me this week at no charge when I discovered that the old cable that came with the mic ten years ago had a short in it at the plug end).  The other new cable I'm using was custom made just ten days ago by one of our senior members on this board, TGAKIDIS. I can't imagine both cables are faulty...

Thanks

There's a Sony warranty too--you might call them.  The PCM-M10 is on their pro site, not the basic consumer site:

Yeah that rules out the cables IMO! I would just try to return it!

BTW, was the connector on the M10 end a straight connector or a right angle connector? I will ONLY use right angle mini cables with my M10s 8)

I assume you must be running your NT4 from an internal 9V battery, have you turned off the plugin power on your M10, as it can cause problems such as
noise when running into a low impedance mic.

Plug In Power setting is off.

Both of my cable plugs are straight mini plugs.  I'll order a right angle one from TGAKIDIS right away;  that's an excellent suggestion, wish I'd thought of it myself.

Amazon will accept a return and will replace with a new unit until Jan 7th, so I'm covered (thanks Mr Bezos).

I appreciate all of your suggestions!
