I want a single box solution.. I'm like running matrixes... This is a box that would fill my needs. Are there any dealbreakers if'n I buy a modded R4? I see them come and go in the yardsale... Why?   (7XX)?

I really like mine.  It's nice being able to run 4 mics, or mics + sbd and having the option to use one or the other source, or a mix of both.  The unit has four preamps on it, unlike the SD 744t which only has two preamps, but two additonal line inputs.  There are a few things that I would like to have on the R4's, like the option to run digital and analog inputs at once, better meters, a usb output, etc.  But overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone!

I love mine and I've had zero problems with it. But to be fair a few have had some issues their units. So do a search and you'll find what I'm talking about.

If you've got the cash the 744 is nice though. But its $2k grand more. If you've got the cash I would go for the R4 pro. From what I've heard its better then the regular R4 and you have the option of running A/D > R4 too.

The R-4 Pro is great, and it runs smoothly Digital + Analog in.  Aside from the ability to do digital/analog in and sync to the digi-in clock source, the gain/trim pots are much more functional IMO than the gain pots + mic/line switches on the regular R-4.

Lately, I've been running 452-> MiniMe -> AES -> chan 1/2 + SBD/2nd pair of mics -> chan 3/4.  I've also now run it using the BUsman mod pres several times as well, and it is nice to have the option to go all-in-one or to add on favorite flavors.

You'll get to see mine in action on Sat. night Brian at the Alfred Howard & the K23 Orchestra show at the Belly Up.

I didn't know that you could run digi + analog in on the R4 Pros.

That's cool  :)

Well and then there's the "Super" R4 - The up and coming Sonosax SX-R4  ;D
 - 4 Mic Pre's + 2 Analog In's (for a total of 6 Analog In's)
 - 8 AES In's - You can record in up to 8 tracks with this deck

A little pricy at an estimated $4500 but could give the 744t a run for the money.

Yeah, and don't forget about the R-4 you can use to take over the world.  But the down side is it costs a MEEL-YON dollars.  But it should give the nuclear powered R-4 a run for the money.

Excellent box that I'm sure I'll miss. I'll be selling mine as soon as I can find a V2.
