Title: UA5 initial set-up and power questions
Post by: waltmon on September 26, 2013, 01:33:13 PM
Well...finally recieved my Busman re-modded UA5...Chris recently upgraded the original mod to his newer quieter amops and other components....

I was wondering if someone could give me some guidance to the best initial set-up etc...low Z Hi Z switches etc.   Can the modded unit still be run via ac power for A>D application for transferring analog masters to my PC? Does anyone sell the wall wart for this unit?

I'd like to hear what battery solution current users are happy with....I was planning on using my battery geek 10-14-88 (12 volt) but most folks seem to be using 9 volt.

Thank you.

I've just used my 9V DVD batteries to do transfers, and not had any issues.  If you find anyone selling actual wall warts let me know, as mine didn't come with one, either.

Do you mind telling me the specific model of the dvd battery you use?

check out this thread, it confirms that a ua5 will run off of 12 volts, so you can use your existing battery.

Since using ac power always brings about the possibility of noise, I'd suggest simply using the battery pack to power the ua5, it should power it for a LONG time.  High z/low z is a non-issue if you're using either the xlr ins on the front or rca ins on the back.  If using rca inputs, turn off the gain on the front and if using xlrs, turn off the gain in the back as both the xlrs and rcas are active at the same time and you don't want to introduce unnecessary noise.

I doubt you can find these anymore, but the ones I've been using are Initial RB-270, 9V/5400 mAh, made in China
