Ok I have a question. I have been taping for a few years, but a couple of the big arenas in my area have installed metal detectors. any tips on how to deal (get past) these?
I only had 1 encounter with these at a small venue with handheld ones and the lady had a defective one (not working right), or saw how innocent i was (white guy at a hip hop show) and turned it off
it also amazes me at the amount of security they have today, and the size of the old school recorders, (70s onward) did they just not check before? I cant imagine trying to sneak a big ass reel to reel or cassette recorder from the 70s

They are looking for knives and guns, if you're not carrying a knife or a gun don't worry about it.
The 70's were different, you could slip a guy a few bucks and he'd find an outlet for your extension cord to your reel-to-reel. Now every minimum wage security dick feels that they are homeland security...

I suggest using two metal detectors aimed 110° apart, with about a foot of distance between them. Gets a nice, spacious stereo image with plenty of detail. Be sure to turn off your recorder's phantom powering, though, since that isn't usually the right method for these devices.

I dont know what gear you are using, but Ive never had a problem getting in wanded OR walking through an actual metal detector. The gear I have snuck in has been everything from an old Sony minidisc (2 different models), CL JB3, Edirol R09, and the Sony PCM-M10. All had no detection issues.
mics ive snuck in with those recorders were CSB's, HEB's, CA-14's. CS Battery boxes have never set them off, either.
Dont worry about it.

As pointed out earlier, this is all about looking for guns and other weapons. I've walked through quite a few now (particularly in new arenas this summer.). I must admit, they do make you sweat as they look like they'd go off on your kit, but bear in mind they'd trigger with every mobile phone if they were set at levels to detect a m10 or ro9 for example.

CA-14 with clips? The clips are made from metal I think.

If they were set at a low enough sensitivity to detect the small clips, people would need to start lining up a week ahead of time to get everyone searched.

Amen. There's more metal in anyone's shoes or jackets than there's in two small lapel clips.

Load your pockets with spare change etc so if it goes off you have plenty of excuses and hopefully they will just let you on in after they see it was the change. As reported, I believe the sensitivity levels can be set on these units so usually it's not a problem.

I also had a CA9200 deep, and my M10 "phone" in my hand. Not my usual M-O, I was just lazy.
Since I quit drugs, I love the adrenaline rush when I get away with something.

Nice one. The M10 looks like a phone if it's held upside down (or, as I do, placed in a camera pouch with my keys and wallet). :)
Unless explicitly told by artist/management/label, security aren't gonna bug you about mics -- at least I've found that.

Most security guys wouldn't recognise a stealthable mic anyway :P I've been asked about my small mics (CAFS and CA14s) several times and always say they're earphones - no further question by them.

So if I stuff my CA-14s in my ears and leave them plugged in to my 9200 and M10, I can claim they are just earbuds plugged into my headphone amp and MP3 player. Nice! ;D
