Topic: best Hz bass roll-off?

i'm running at853's into a JB3 and have a batt box w/a manual bass roll-off setting (switches)

options are:

107

888

i won't have headphones to check the sound, so i'm asking for advice.  i'm running stealth for Sigur Ros, 12th row center.  thanks!

107 would be my choice- it would just cut the offending "rumble", also how much will it cut, 15db?

I tried the built-in roll-off on my 853's and was REALLY disappointed.  I felt that it cut too much and made everything else sound brittle.  So, whatever freq. they're using, I'd say use less.

I would just run the mics with no roll-off, unless you've made recordings with the same setup in the past and you think they are too bass heavy.  that's my opinion, of course.

with the jb3, you must divide the mHz by 3.7 (the resisitance of the device) to get a better idea of how much roll is happening.

when i use my spsb-7, i generally use 69 - 107, depending on the type of music and the venue.

69 = 18.6
95 = 25.7
107 = 28.9

the effect is almost nill... however, i look at it as a way to allow more gain to be added with less distortion from the low end.

Since I found out by reading here that they have almost no effect (apart from 888Hz), I've stopped using bass roll off.

One exception was an exceptionally bass heavy show by a metal band. Halfway through the set I took the cover off the box and switched b.r.o. to 888Hz...too much. I ended up running a bass cut on the first half, and boosted bass on the second half. Both halfs now sound roughly the same..

with my cmc-8 > spsb-1(or3) > jb3 i always use 888.  The way the cmc-8s are designed and the way the jb3 is built, i tend to get bass distortion, not sure why.  i know people with cmc-8 > dat rig that get great recordings with no bass distortion.  so if I have to boost bass at the end... I do it.. very annoyed at the whole thing, but oh well....

Unless you have reason to believe that the signal will overpower your gear, I would not use any rolloff.  Fix it later if it sounds bad, cause you can't go back and add bass that's not there.
