302 vs MixPre-D for DSLR
« on: March 18, 2013, 11:34:15 AM »
We use a DSLR to record video. It has a 1/8" mic level input (Canon 5D M3)
I know the Mixpre-D sells itself on it's mic-level output jack (I believe it's 1/8") specifically for DSLR users.

I have a 302 and I believe the XLR output can be attenuated for mic-level output.

So is there any benefit using the MixpreD instead of the 302 for this purpose?

Thanks!

Steve

From the Sound Devices MixPre-D Manual

•  TA3: unbalanced mic-level output, pin-2 left, pin-3 right, pin-1 ground, 200 ohm output impedance

•  Tape (3.5 mm) Unbalanced, tip-left, ring-right, sleeve-ground, 2.1k ohm output impedance

TA3 to 3.5mm cable, Sound Devices XL-3R or equivalent

Good info, thanks.

but I suppose the original question remains  - will the 302 do the same trick?

Thanks. Is your opinion that the 302 will work as well as the Mixpre-d for feeding the 5D (mic-level 1/8")?

The MixPre-D's TA3 output is intended for DSLR at -36dBu and it's 3.5mm tape output is -10dBu.

The 302's TA3 output is at -15dBu which is higher than mic level, however, the 302's XLR output's are assignable to mic level and adjustable.  You'll need to use a dual xlr to a 3 cond 3.5mm Y-Cable and determine the mic level used by your DSLR.  Follow the procedure in the [302ADVgain.pdf] attached earlier.  Alternately you could use an attenuator cable to go from 302's TA3 line out at -15dBu to the mic level of your DSLR.
