Archiving shows recorded onto HDD
« on: January 17, 2005, 06:47:04 PM »
This poll is more geared towards the tapeless contigency.
Flash based/hard drive based recorders etc.
I did a quick search and was not very pleased with my results so..

I am trying to figure out if I want to archive the entire show uncut
to DVD or just the tracked out version.
I would like to hear systems others are using.
I was thinking of archiving the unedited .wav and the tracked lossless
format with the cue file. (not that I have created any yet when tracking..)
For redundancy sake I was thinking of doing all three.
Archive the uncut recording in .wav, archive the tracked .wavs
and then archive the tracked lossless format.
My biggest concern is just making sure something will last
way past me for others to enjoy. I realize storage plays a huge
role in this and that is one reason for this question.
In case something happens to one dvd the other may still be ok.

I always keep both the tracked "final cut" and also my original.  Just makes sense to me incase I want to re do some post work or whatever.

I do think taping is the reality of the business..it is also an impetus for artists to create studio CDs that are ART, not just another recording...    Fareed Haque  2-4-2005

My normal process is to put a copy of the uncut "master" into FLAC first; then edit, resample/dither & cut up the master WAV; then FLAC up the cut show. Save all to FLAC.

Sometimes, if I have a request, I will cut the show up in 24-bit and FLAC it up as well. If I do that, I will archive that as well, just so that if there are any questions about the FLACs, I can go back to what I originally created.

I only save the tracked flacs on HD and cd (and soon dvd).

I don't track and flac till I'm happy with the results (though I do little post production on most shows), and if I am unsure about how it was tracked I save the original file till I'm sure I'm right.

Better safe than sorry, so it won't hurt to have the whole wav and split flacs.

With media prices always dropping I'm sure I'll be making 2 dvd copies so I have one off-site.  ;D

Track it and FLAC it only. Any post work for listening is done after the archival copy. If it sounds that much better on every system I hear it on over a few months, I'd add the reworked copy to my binder as well.
Out of the game … for now?

I think if I went 24 bit I would follow with the same procedure, I follow now with 16 bit.
I could always downsample down the road instead of keeping a 16 bit version around.
archive unedited version, tracked version, flac version. (cue file to tracks, if I ever remember)

when i used to tape at 48khz, i'd save the untracked show along with a .cue sheet for a 44.1khz copy so all i need to do is convert it again and load the cue sheet in cd wav.  however, now i tape at 44.1khz because its just easier overall and now i just saved the tracked copies, since i'm not really cutting anything anyway.

I don't have a DVD recorder, so I archive:

-Untracked FLAC + CDWave cue
-Tracked FLAC + text file

I figure something may one day happen to my masters, so I Bit Torrent as many of them as possible. Friends keep audio copies of some of the better ones.
