Title: Canon 6D vs 5DmkII
Post by: johnw on May 19, 2013, 10:24:23 AM
I'm thinking of trying a new body in the next couple of months. Currently I have a 20D and I've never been happy with its auto focus. I'd like to try full frame and I don't need the 5DmkIII. I've played around with both the 6D and the 5D mark II in the stores. The 6D seems easier to use and more familiar coming from the 20D. Has anyone used both and have an opinion? This would be mostly for portraits, no flash and occasionally night, concert or flowers. Video is not as important. My main desire is strong autofocus in low light.

EDIT to add that I use the center point only for focusing 99% of the time.

The 5D mk III will be your best bet for low light.

All of them will be a HUGE upgrade over that 20D though.

I'm leaning towards the 6D because I take a lot of landscapes and I want the GPS function. I also like the Wi-fi function so I can use my phone as a viewfinder.

I agree that the 5D mk III would likely be the best, but that's another $1500 over the 6D and $2000 over a refurb mk II.  It just isn't worth it to me for how little I do with it.

The wifi on the 6D seems like a cool feature but I don't know how well it would work as a live viewfinder since I would guess there would some delay. The GPS thing kind of freaks me out. Not sure I like people knowing exactly where I am/have been. I keep it off on my iphone.

Psst..."they" can still track you with your phone even with the GPS off. They can't if you turn off the GPS on the 6D.

I can't remember who, but a well known tv personality uploaded a pic taken at his house with the GPS function turned on.  A weirdo downloaded the pic and was able to find the house from the GPS information in the photo's meta data.  I'm not worried about anyone stalking me ... but as a general rule, I leave it off.

The only time I turn GPS on in my iPhone is when I have to use Google Maps.  I realize you can still be tracked when GPS is turned off (or for that matter - even when the phone is turned off, but the battery is still in it).  But that's pretty much only by the police.

Not worried about the government or someone tracking my phone exactly. But i do share some photos with my extended family and they make them public on the web. I don't like the idea of posting the gps coordinates of my children/home. A fiend of mine had her house robbed a few years back by a facebook acquaintance after she posted photos of her trip while still on vacation.
