Topic: Cable testing?

Whats a good way to test a cable for quality (without zillion dollar hardware or an oscillascope?)?

I'm using a firewire ada and I think I can loop a wave through my cable and record the result / compare. Is there software that can do this for me?

I'm on a mac but have access to other hardware.
