Apex 435 w/Peluso mod?
« on: March 22, 2006, 08:19:55 PM »
What's this all about?...neato!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7401321197

I have a pair of 435s - I haven't used them enough to have an opinion on the stock mic..

This looks like an interesting and inexpensive upgrade path...

"REPLACING THE CHINESE CAPSULE WITH THE PELUSO ELEVATES THIS MICROPHONE INTO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LEAGUE WHICH MAKES IT EQUIVALENT TO A TLM 103 BUT WITH MORE HEADROOM"

I know there are some Peluso fans here...is a CEK-89 capsule pretty good?

I don't know about these claims.  Isn't the mechanical part of the mic going to suck?  Besides, the board shown in one of those pictures had tantalum caps.  What's up with that?

I ordered an Apex 460 9-polar pattern tube microphone completely modified by Dave Thomas.  It has the Peluso CEK-12 capsule in it among a a plethora of other upgrades.  It's suppose to come sometime early next week! I can't friggin' wait I'm so excited.  I've heard samples and to my ears, it beat out a Neumann M149, Neuman U87, and B.L.U.E. Kiwi.  The only microphone it didn't beat in the sample was an original AKG C12.  $600 shipped from Canada :o

So i say go for it!  i've heard/read nothing but great reviews about this guy's work and the samples I've heard for my microphone back it up.

also regarding the 435:

I know it's just one specifcation.....but that frequency response looks nice!  might need a little high end boost in post to even out sound in some situations, but I like how flat it is.

I've seen some interesting things on these Apex mics...
Check out this article comparing the stock Apex 460 and the R-F-T Telefunken M16.
The Apex msrp is in the $230 range while the telefunken is round $1400.

Seems, however, that they are basically the same mics.

that's how i found out about the 460.

last i heard telefunken was caught red-handed and has since discontinued the M16.  Somebody mentioned to me that they were going to bring it back, but this time, actually according to Telefunken spec ;)

I can't wait for my mod460 to come in.  I feel like I'm 5 years old old again on my way to buy a new bike :D

yeah I've considered grabbing one (the 460) myself at some point, if for nothing else than just to play with.
with that sort of pricing, It's kind of tempting.
