Audiophile 2496 Volume Control Problem
« on: September 02, 2004, 08:22:04 PM »

I just installed an audiophile 2496 sound card and I played a minidisc through it but I got no sound. So I went to Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Adjust System Volume to check the volume and the "Device Volume" option under the Volume tab is grayed out and it is set all the way on Low so basically it's on mute. since it's grayed out I can't change it so i won't be able to get any sound until i figure this out. anyone know what's going on?

make sure your Playback Device Preference is set to the 2496 under windows control panel.
under MAudio's control panel, your Patchbay/Router needs to be set at H/W WaveOut.

how is your md hooked up to your computer?

you should have said so first.... :)

set your Patchbay/Router to s/pdif in.
set your s/pdif to optical input under Digial Input.
set your Recording Device preference to Maudio s/pdif. under Control Panel.

My 2496 doesn't have opti in either. Use the Maudio control panel to control volume/routing.  The greyed out options are that way cause you can't use windows to control the card, you have to use the maudio app.  To just listen to something thru the 2496, just select the correct input under the hardware out 1/2 column and you're happnin'.

no, they are not the same. the digital inputs on that card are coaxial, not optical. does your deck have coax out?

Fuck!  I think I paid $150 for mine.  Bought it from Core Sound, and they're now selling it for $95.

What's with the crazy price drops?  Do these people know something I don't?  Is my soundcard about to self-destruct?  ???

if you deck only has optical out, then you will need a format converter. you can get a cheap one from radio shack. i have one...not sure if its bit perfect, but you are using minidisc so it shouldnt matter that much. here is a link to the unit, i got mine for $15 in the store:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=15-1242

your other option is to run analog out into the rca ins on the audiophile card, provided you have an analog out. is this a home deck, or a walkman type minidisc? if home deck a standard stereo rca>stereo rca cable will work, if its a compact you can run line out or headphone out and you will need an 1/8"mini>stereo rca cable

thanks Chris, I think I'll have to take a trip to Radio Shack. The MXD-D400 is a home deck. I don't want to use analog out b/c I got this deck and an audiophile specifically for doing digital transfers. Is this Signal Converter going to ruin the digital transfer?

ruin...probably not, at the most a few missed samples that will not be audible, but for the purist it may be a problem.

if you are worried about bit-perfectness, you may want to get the hosa odl-276 as it has been tested and proven to be bit perfect, although i have never used one. here is a link to the product on hosa's site. you may be able to find one on ebay, or at a large music store or do an ISO in the ts.com yard sale

if the converter is bit perffect, there will be no difference.

if not, you probly still won't hear a difference
