why does bit torrent have to be such a freaking pain
« on: June 20, 2007, 07:44:12 PM »
ok... first off I'm fairly computer literate. I mean, I make a living as a software engineer so I know a thing or two about these machines. So why is seeding a bit torrent so damn difficult? Once I get my files ready to seed I can have them uploading via FTP to archive.org in less than two minutes. I've never ever had a problem uploading my files there, but every time I try to seed a bit torrent it is a freaking hassle. I just spent over two hours trying to start a bit torrent and never got an actual leecher to connect to me. I tried two different trackers and three different bit torrent clients on two different computers. It shouldn't be this damn hard.

Trackers used : bt.etree.org and www.dimeadozen.org(http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=151455&dllist=1#seeders)
clients used : BitTornado (my favorite), Utorrent, and Azerus (first time using it and I hated it. I'll never ever use it again for anything)
ISP: comcast

I tried enabling encryption in utorrent and ran all the tests in the speed guide. everything seems fine. still no leechers. I eventually just deleted the torrent from etree, and tried dimeadozen. still no luck. I give up. if someone wants to seed my non-archive friendly sources from wakarusa PM me. I'm going to hit the treadmill now and work out some agression.

I have comcast also and I've noticed that in bit tornado I have to be in superseed mode for peers to connect (when initially seeding)

and I think uTorrent has a superseed mode also

I followed the suggesstion in that thread for utorrent, but it wasn't working immediatley. I left the seed open for 30 minutes and even though there were 4 leechers in the swarm none of them had connected to me and I was the only seeder. Well I left the window open while I went for my run, and when I came back 45 minutes later it was working. I guess it can take an hour or so before leechers can actually connect to you. oh well it's working now, but I still hate bit torrent ;D

I guess you have checked all your firewall/port forwarding settings as well?

yep. once people finally get connected things move along at a normal rate ( my upload is capped at 50k/sec).

BE PATIENT brah! make sure 'Inital Seeder' is checked in utorrent(superseed) and just be pateint. it takes me an hr or 2 to finally get the ball rolling. who cares. its still much quicker than uploading 1GB to an FTP. unless you are upping at 250kbs

This is normal for me and after I stop/Start Utorrent a few times spread out over 30 mins a piece, it works eventually. just takes awhile for etree and utorrent to catch up :)

Ever since I updated to the official 4.X client - that blew it all for me - I've never been able to get ANY client working again...!

Never had any issues ever - until that one shit release of Cohens client came out...

I can still leach (firewalled) - but I havent seeded in a long time - I mess with it once in a while - but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of it now...

I give up...

most likely your leechers arent connectable, and it takes time for them to update tracker and see you as a seeder.

I've never had problems seeding with utorrent, and I dont even superseed. I usually connect within an hour, and end up seeding to a ratio of ~1.2

It's your ISP. Comcast apparently prevents seeding. Unless you can use an HTTPS tracker, you're probably SOL.

I haven't had any problem seeding on a Comcast line.

I have read Comcast uses "traffic shaping" which will throttle you U/L's and D/L's.  Use uTorrents encryption otion to help with this.  I use TTD for seeding.  I had trouble with the guy(s) at DoD and also had troubles with no seeders on etree.  I worked with the guy who owns etree and we had no solution.  I now use TTD and it is working fine.  I hooked up all my fave PDX band's recordings and they found leechers in about an hour the first time and pretty quick subsequently.

Maybe if you tried TTD you would have better luck.  I have.  And turn on that encryption, and maybe turn on a little patience, too.

Cheers.    8)

I use RC4 encryption with Azureus on a Comcast line without problems.  Before I used encryption, it would take me a full day to connect to even one peer (even though there were 100 trying to connect).  There is a thread from a few weeks ago, "BT seeding problems with Comcast," that you might want to check out.

Okay, I just began to experience this problem with seeding.  Up til now, it has never been a problem, and every torrent I seeded ran fine.  Now there are peers out there, and nothing is uploading.  I have enabled encryption, but it is still not doing the trick.  Any help, ideas, etc.  This is pissing me off big time. I have enabled encryption, and when I have it minimized it seems to just start up from time to time, but when I click and open the screen all of the torrents drop down slowly to zero bytes.  I am beginning to hate Comcast even more.

not sure what your problem is, but with utorrent, all odf my stuff goes up and seeds immediately.

maybe try downloading the torrent file from teh site after you upload it, sometimes there are passkeys or other things the trackers add.
