question about dual layer authoring/layer break
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:19:43 PM »
I'm using vegas 8 to edit, render etc and dvd lab to author.  generally I like to spit a show onto 2 dvd5's.  I'm working on a 2 cam col bruce show and there is no good place to split b/c of the segues.  even when there aren't actual segues there is zero time between songs to make a disc split.

anyway when authoring a dual layer do you leave it up to the burning software to decide where the break is?  again I'm using dvd lab and it seems from looking at the help files that is what should be done.

I did this, compiled and watched it.  at the layer break (very close to a chapter point) it skips that chapter and goes ahead one.  basically it skips a whole song at the break.  I moved the chapter point back about a second but can't go in further back or forward with it b/c of the segues.  I have not re-complied.  thought I'd ask what others do, or for tips etc first.

that free software does the trick.....ive d/l some dvds that need dual layer burning....and it worked flawlessly.  only other advice is that (obviously) burn at a slower speed vs. whatever the disc is rated at..   i have some 8x verbatims that i burn at 2x...

I believe layer breaks are required to be at a chapter point to be within DVD-Video spec.  Most pro apps require this else they render with errors.  Also, Layer 0 must be larger in size than Layer 1.  You will just have to create a chapter point at some point between a song.  These are the two biggest things that tripped me up when doing my first dual-layer authoring.

There are also options for OTP (opposite track path) or PTP (parallel track path.)  For the shortest layer break time, choose OTP.  On OTP, the laser reads from the inner part of the disc to the outer part, then at the layer break, it jumps from Layer 0 to Layer 1 at the outer part of the disc and starts reading back inward.

i use a mac
but it requires a marker of some sort as the break point - typically chapters
if you set the break at a chapter point you should be ok
you might have to add a break point to fit the layers depending on the size of each
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Best thing to do is let your app set the best possible layer break... in the authoring app or set it yourself... very easy to do
just make sure to set a layer break not layer jump good luck and enjoy.
BTW: Gordon you sending that to Sick Rick when finished?

it'll go on traders den.  I ended up spiting it.  first dvd is only 35 mins .  I used imgburn, ones and nero and all had a noticeable layer break on my OPPO player.
