When I power on my D50 with a memory stick in it comes up with "Unknown Media". I press the stop button and it goes the the main screen and will record onto the stick or internal memory as normal but I was wondering if there is a specific reason it gives this message and if I can get rid of it.
-
I'm assuming it gives this message because I'm using a regular MS Pro Duo and not one of the newer types that are supposed to be used with the D50. Will there be any danger of corrupted files or anything else using a regular stick?
-
I am interested too. Mine does, or at least did, the same thing. For some reason it stopped displaying the message.
Anyone?

Hi folks I use Sandiks Ultra II 4 GB on 2 Devices PCM D-50 since Januar not one file was damaged, just press press play and you go.
SONY is whacky protecting the sales of there Microsticks and makes the costumers a bit.... &(&/(/)(?)=?`=(+
-
Yeah, kind of what I figured. Thanks.
-
In the manual is says
UNKNOWN MEDIA: The "Memory Stick" not supported is inserted. Use a "Memory Stick" that the recorder supports. We cannot guarentee operations with unknown media
can you even get to the menu screen to format it? I used a friends card once and it said the same thing but I formatted it and it worked fine for the show.
what I'm wondering is if you can use a 8 gig card in the unit. I asked the guy at the store if it would work and he stated that the machine might only support the 4 gig card, has anyone tried this.
Hope it works out.

I have an 8GB card but I have not had the chance to use it all yet. The recorder recognizes the stick fine after it show the unknown media message. It seems like that it just some automatic message that comes up but doesn't actually affect the performance as far as I can tell. With an 8GB card set to 44.1/24 bit I'm showing about 8 1/2 hours left with a couple things already on the card so I must assume that it is being recognized and used fully.
-
I've used a Sandisk Ultra II 8GB card since I bought my D50 earlier this year and have not had a single problem with it.
I do wish I could remove the "unknown media" message though. Its just another uneeded button press. I'd love to see a firmware update address this...but, being Sony I seriously doubt that will ever happen :(
Now, if I could just hack these dang microphones off the top of this thing, the recorder would be perfect! :D

Its not possible for the D50 to have a Firmware Upgrade, its a closed black box....
-
Firmware upgrades involve software writing new information onto an internal chip of the device. You don't actually have to open the device. I don't know if Sony has plans for firmware updates or if it's even possible with the D50 since all you see when it's plugged is a removable drive. A firmware update for the D50 would probably have to be a self-installing executable file or something similar.

I have the service manual I checked it with SONY. I its not possible beleve me no Flashrom. Is a closed box as the D1 where never was an Update, these 2 machines are finished products not like Microtrack`s

OK. By closed box you meant no way to flash the internal chips. I just misunderstood the original wording.

Yes not possible they meda a lot of beta testing before they go to the market and it`s martured product with no "flaws" heheheh exept to generate sales 4 Sony MS Styx! I miss a Play knob on the remote. And I have to cancel the unknown unfriendly message to- All the time cchchchrrrrr........

any news on using sandisk 8 gig cards to full capacity?
any problems orther than the start up screen?
-
I let it run to capacity at 24/96 to test it and didn't have any errors.
-
I just received my D50 earlier this week, lovin' it!! I purchased a Sandisk 8GB Ultra II PRO DUO 15mb/s from buy.com for $53. and just put it in my D50. NO error message, I repeat, NO error message, it did blink twice with the "accessing media" screen but gave me no error message whatsoever. I went through the menu and formatted the card, again, no problem, and ran a 10 minute record test at 24/48, no problems again. It shows 7h 46m 27s as far as remaining time.
Only one issue, is anyone else have a little trouble pulling out the card with their fingertips?? I had to use tweezers to grab hold of it with that access door opened up. I am looking forward to a field test with my new CA-14 cards and a CA 9100 this weekend...

To chime in on this thread, I have a 16 GB Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo Mark 2 and it works perfectly without any error screens or anything of the sort. It reads the time remaining fine and shows up on the little bar on the lower right corner of the D50 screen.

Very good to know. Anyone know where the best price on one of these might be found??

It appears that we are even getting counterfeiters here in the states. This guy sent me a fake card. Says he just found out about it and has already refunded my money. Will pay a bit more for the genuine article from reputable dealer. No more ebay cards for this kid... Just a head's up peeps.
-
A lot of cards listed on eBay are fakes. I remember that eBay had a warning about counterfeit memory cards at one point. I would only buy from a reputable source.

Glad to hear the larger cards are working. I have the same problem trying to get the card out. Anybody have a solution for that?
Thanks

Just received a 16gb Sony DUO Pro Mark 2 card from Buy.com for $98.26. It works perfectly in my D50, no error messages on start-up and it's the GENUINE article.

Here's the ebay link regarding fakes :

So I assume all the error messages are with "Memory Stick Pro Duo MagicGate"?
Kind regards,
JM.

There are no problems with the cards marked "Magic Gate" per se. It's the counterfeit cards and some brand other than Sony that are giving the error messages. I've got a 4GB Sony, a 16GB Sony, a and a Sandisk Ultra II 8GB all marked "Magic Gate", and "PRO Duo", and they all work beautifully. Of course they are all "genuine" brand products. I think the lesson here is stay away from the cheapo ebay and likely counterfeit memory cards...

Why anyone would trust their data, either photographic or audio, to any media other than a top name brand from an unimpeachable source in the first place is totally beyond me....
