The Manleys have arrived...
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:03:18 PM »
Just went to the UPS station and grabbed my Snapper mono blocks and Shrimp pre amp.  :o  Should be a fun weekend of listening through the VR4 jrs...

They'll follow - I've got things up and running and just cracked a bottle of Blanton's to start sipping on...

I'm still working on these fuckers.  I think I may have blown what's known as the B fuse in the mono blocks and now need to replace.  Manley has told me it could very well be a bad tube, but I need to do this first.  I just finished opening up the bottom of one of the snappers - i was a little hesitant to say the least b/c of the high voltage in these things.  The point to point hand wiring is absolutely sick in these things.  I should be able to swap fuses over the weekend and see if I can't get them back up and running.

I'll snap some pics over the weekend - I'm going to have to get back inside to swap out the fuses.  Luckily, I just tested the pre amp and the 4jrs and they seem to be working fine.

Not at all.  I turned off an upstream compononent (i.e. CD player) before powering down the blocks.  I basically sent a spike down the chain.  Lesson learned, no problem at all.  That's why the fuse is there, to protect the equipment from mistakes like this.  Their customer service has been incredible.  I received 3 e-mails from the service tech plus a phone call.  Then, Eve Anna e-mailed me herself to discuss the problem.  I should be able to get everyting back up after the weekend - I leave for a conference this afternoon and won't be home until Sunday.

Mahi on steroids, sort of.
BTW, I'm demoing the Portal as I type.
Dual mono, Darlington Switching transistors, gets a sort of tube-like sound without any compression component.
If that makes sense...

It has a very serious, controlled bottom.
Sweet midrange (honest)
It is a bit present and the very top end  "breathes-out" just the tinest bit.
Very impressive.
Definitely not as sweet as the Mahi-Mahi.

I'd like to see the Snappers in a practical application and in proportion to other gear.
One of my main concerns with true dual mono (was considering old Dynaco Mk III or Mk IV) is the logistics.
Mostly, I'd like a pic to show the OL how artistic and attractive they can be in the den.
The eternal battle for music vs. appearance.
The Manley gear is "deco pretty" and with the right stand/ shelf and associated furniture / art it could be a focal in a room.
I have zero ability to make a space look good.
I used to keep a Sportster frame in one of my old apartments...   :P

If you don't see the contradiction in those two statements, you need help ;-)

Or maybe I do.

I have a pair of MK IVs, they're really not that big, maybe 5x12x6h  They sound nice, but for ease i brought one of ST-70s to the new apt, MK-IVs went to storage.
SB2 / Rega P1 > Modified Dynaco PAS2 > Modified Dynaco MK-IV monoblocks> Axiom M22 v2

We're back up and running since last Monday.  I guess I should have paid more attention to the manual...

well...how do they sound?

They sound great!  Extremely accurate and very fast - surprising for an all tube set-up.  I switched out all my interconnects and speaker cables as well, so the system is a little bright, but hopefully it will settle in with a few more hours of playback.  The imagaing with the 4jr's is sickening, the sound just appears in the center.  Pretty amazing when you consider I have the 4jr's split about 10 - 12 feet.  Overall, couldn't be happier with the new gear...
