Title: How to remove DRM from audio files
Post by: Phil Zone on June 21, 2014, 06:14:29 AM
Hi
So I just was given hundreds of CDs, I ripped the majority and am finding some have drms which is the digital rights management and it's preventing me from putting and playing on my ipod and causing lots of problems. These are wma files. Anyone know what to do?

Thank you

Isnt this a wma issue? - do wav rips act the same...?

For sure don't be using a MS program to rip...

what program are you using to rip the cds?  If your ultimate destination is your iPod (via iTunes?), you might be best off ripping them into iTunes to apple lossless (as this will create clones of the cds in a lossless format that a newish iPod should recognize/play) you can even set up iTunes to transcode to a lossy version when x-fering to your iPod to save space on your iPod.  I don't recall ever having a drm issue when ripping css -- dvd audio and blu-ray yes, but not with cd --

I should have said its rock boxed ipod so it plays WMA I have many other wma that play fine its just a group of the protected files and I cant convert to mp3 or use then in video software because. So I guess I have to unlock them.

I used windows media player to rip and tried nch express rip.

I would just re-rip the CD's with Exact Audio Copy. I don't even think it has an option to encode them with DRM.

It does require about 15 minutes of your time to set up correctly, but once you do you are pretty much guaranteed to rip your CD's error free (and DRM free). It does a great job of looking up titles and images too.
