Zoom H5
« on: May 08, 2019, 09:37:07 AM »
After 18 years my EAA microphone preamp has finally given up. I mainly stealth all shows that I record and am thinking about downsizing my rig and eliminating the preamp by purchasing this zoom h5 which has built-in phantom power I have Neuman  km140 microphones and was wondering if anyone knew how good the mic pre is in this deck. I would rather stay away from buying another external preamp or phantom power unit and would really like to downsize what I have to drag in to these shows as it's getting harder all the time

What sort of stuff are you recording?  If it's loud concerts, the pre in this is probably just fine.  If it's quiet acoustic stuff or nature, you might want to worry more about the pre.  Maybe someone will have first-hand experience with the H5, though.

  • If it's too loud, turn it down.

There are better internal preamps out there but it should work just fine for what you're doing.
