To those that have 853 subcard caps
« on: June 12, 2009, 10:45:00 AM »
What taping situations do you use them in?

I have 853 card, hyper, and am ordering omni.  I am thinking about just having all 4 caps, but want to see where tapers use them and decide if I would have any use for them for what music I tape.

TIA.

Just used my subs for the 2nd time at Phish in Mansfield. So far, really like them.   I was seated just behind the main floor level in the front row of the 2nd level of seats.  Ran the subs because I was pretty right on to the right set of stacks and didn't have anybody seated directly in front of me + was expecting very little direct chatter.  They give a lil' fuller response imo (pick up more low end).  I can try to post samples or maybe upload bt's of my 2 recordings with them.

So it appears that you need to be in a particular sweet spot in a venue for them to work at their best?  Any reason why they are chosen of omni's?

Any samples would be appreciated greatly when you have the time.

I don't own the omni's yet.  I used them b/c they offer a wider pickup yet still reject the rear.  In my spot, had a lot of noise directly behind but pretty open air directly in front.  I'd use the subs in that situation (where I want to reject rear noise).  I'll try to get something posted.

Thanks for this - curious to hear these as well, as I am often in a fairly close-in situation where I don't quite want omnis picking up every stupid conversation around me, but where I don't need tons of directionality..

Will try to get my Ray LaMontagne recording with the subcards up over at dime.

What taping situations do you use them in?

The rule of thumb that I've always thought of is to use subcards in the same situations that I would use omnis

1. except, due to whatever reason, it is too difficult/impossible to split the omnis or too much hassle to run a Jecklin disc. There have been many situations where splitting omnis was impossible because it was difficult enough for me to block one stand much less two. I'm talking wide split > 8'.

2. or, like you say, the rear crowd/reverb rejections is desired.

These situations for subcards would most likely be outdoors, onstage, or indoors in a good sounding room up front.

Bear in mind that my Phish posting was a stealth pull.  Had the mics in a far from desirable location (clipped to the inside of my pants legs) and has a lot of phase shifting issues due to people walking in front of me.

Was the best thing going...so you know, I'm in a wheelchair...this venues wheelchair seating is at the front of a second row which is teired well above the first row, so from the seated position and with no one seated in front of me, clipping the mics to the pants knee high has been my best option for keeping them somewhat out of sight and having a decent shot at the stacks.  There was only open taping allowed in the ots, which rather unfortunately is not w/c accesable.  The staff are all over by the w/c section so you have to be discreet.

Excellent advice, thank you very much.

I usually split omni's 3' without issue, but I like the fact that the subcards can be good for rear crowd/reverb rejections.

SP has some left.

contact Dave Webb at ATUSA. If they still have them you'll save a good chunk of $$.

Chris will bring that price down to $45 each if you ask.  I just bought omni caps from Sound Pros.

^ nice. I have a slightly pricey ticket to buy this week..I think I'm gonna order mine next week.

Ps. I found that a pill dispenser fits the 853 caps perfectly, like one of the one with the little compartments for the days of the week..that's what I'm using now.

I picked up: http://www.tackledirect.com/plano-3-small-waterproof-boxes.html

3 different, waterproof containers...1 is completely open (i store 4 aa batts and 2 sd cards in this one)...1 with six compartments (currently not using)....1 with 4 compartments (lined with anti-static and storing my caps comfortably, securely, and safely)

Really diggin' it...

They will definitely sell them directly to a consumer if you contact them. I got mine straight from AT.

I have called the Stow,OH office numerous times and each time am told that they only sell to vendors. I even emailed the person the guy above said he bought his from and received an email (from the guy at AT) saying the same thing..products must be purchased via an authorised AT vendor/dealer.

I use them head-worn in small venues very often and love the result. Less chatty than omnis but without the potential phasing issues of cards.
