Nak CM300 phantom power mod
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:33:17 AM »
I'm not sure how this forum works but here goes again. I have several Nak CM 300's.  I want to find ainformation on modification required to run them from a 48 V Phantom power preamp in a tascam DA-P1 DAT portable  recorder.  I am happy to keep the barrels and just want to know what internal modificationws are needed to use phantom instead of the hard to find 9 V batteries.  There seems to be some info in the forum but very old and no pictures are present as they have been dropped at some time.  IF possible can someone reply direct.  Having a tough time figuring where posts wind up.  Tried twice now and they seem to not be here.

I went thru that thread but it did not deal with using the whole microphone and just modifying it to take the 48 V.  Seemed more to eliminate the barrel and use some sort of other preamp and some sort of attenuator pad.

I see what you're getting at now.  I don't recall any info on here for simply modding them for p48 while keeping the mic body intact.  I do know that Stephen Sank will perform this mod for you.  I can find his email if you're interested.

Yeah - there was that german set...the schematics are here somewhere - but they are rough and in German...

Here's the thing - the mics still only run on 9V - So you would be more or less wasting the batteries on the DAP1 running that 48 volts into them...only to have it stepped down to 9 anyway...

The original "Franken Nak" mod is good because it seperates the battery voltage from the signal (the stock setup has the battery and signal on the same rail) - but the fellow who designed that had a few other goals on his mind...not just running them on Phantom...

If it were me - I'd be looking at a 3 wire battery box that you can run snap-on 9volt batteries...use the Franken Nak electronic approach - (but keep the bodies)

There are a few of us who are in the middle of trying to do this...so stay tuned -

Does Sank still do that mod?

I had my mics modded for p48 last winter by him.  I'm assuming he will still do this.

Does the Sank mod alter the signal path ala the Franken Nak mod...? Just curious...

I don't believe so.  But you may want to check with him to be sure: bk11@thuntek.net

I emailed Stephen Sank and he is going to modify 2 of my Nak CM 300's.  I am leaving two other CM 300's un modified since I would have to get the CP4 shotguns modified also if I want to use them and don't have unmodified barrels.  That would be 6 mods and with the minimal use it is a lot to spend.  I don't use the shotguns that much so unless I build phantom power into my home mede preamp I would not be able to use it with any of the modified mikes. With two modified and two unmodified I will have great versitility. Thanks to all for the info.

THe Sank mod makes them sound a lot better. He is increasing the voltage from 9 to I'm guessing 30. Or else he is doing something else to make them sound better.

Hey Matt, is that Reutelhuber pre dedicated to your mod700s?

yeah, it's specifically designed for the mod 700s in that it provides 9V battery power and I'm guessing about 40dB of gain. It has four 9V batteries, BNC ins, and two pair of RCA outs.

Cool, is it transformer based?
