Title: Tascam DR70D vs. Schoeps VMS02IB Preamp COMP! Birds & Nature Stuff [mk4 & mk41]
Post by: F.O.Bean on June 19, 2016, 10:04:08 AM
First off, not the most scientific comp ever. Just recorded from my front porch, pointing towards the woods across the street from my house! I just wanted to give other tapers an idea how quiet the 70D preamps were compared to my VMS02IB preamp, which was run at +40db! Since I mainly do amplified, loud music, they don't need to be ultra quiet for what I record! You can judge for yourself if they are quiet enough for your needs based on this comp! Later today, I'll be recording some louder traffic and stuff at my relatives down the street, to give everyone an idea how quiet the preamps are, comparing something very silent like the Birds samples posted below vs. the louder sounds of traffic going by at close range!

OK, just did some super quiet recording of the birds and nature around 6:30am this morning[6.19.2016]! These are the RAW untouched files, just FLAC'd@Level 8 with TLH! I ran the mk41s with all four gain modes[LOW/MID/HIGH/HIGH+PLUS] of the DR70D, just so yinz could all hear the internal preamps with some quiet mics 8) ;D

Both setups were in Rycote INV6-HG Shocks, with Movo WS80 screens on! The mk41s were ran in DINa, and the mk4s ran ORTF! Tascam 70D run with v1.13 FW!

Stereo Files:
1S12 are mk41>PFA>70d preamps on LOW Gain@MAX[5 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, MIC IN/Phantom ON
1S34 are mk4>VMS02IB>70d and on LOW Gain@MAX[5 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, LINE IN

2S12 are mk41>PFA>70d preamps on MID Gain@HALF[12 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, MIC IN/Phantom ON
2S34 are mk4>VMS02IB>70d and on LOW Gain@MAX[5 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, LINE IN

3S12 are mk41>PFA>70d preamps on HIGH Gain@HALF[12 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, MIC IN/Phantom ON
3S34 are mk4>VMS02IB>70d and on LOW Gain@MAX[5 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, LINE IN

5S12 are mk41>PFA>70d preamps on HIGH+[PLUS] Gain@[9-10 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, MIC IN/Phantom ON
5S34 are mk4>VMS02IB>70d and on LOW Gain@MAX[5 o'clock], 24/96 BWAVs, LINE IN

You da man Bean! Quality post right here, just wish I wasn't out of town without a proper listening setup. We NEED more forum participation like this!

On a technical note, one thing I would mention is that preamp noise characteristics can differ by design. Specifially, some circuits have more noise as gain increase while others have the lowest noise at highest gain. For concert taping, we can run comps of nature recordings at typical gain values (i.e. 20dB) and then normalize in software to hear the differences at listenable volume levels.

Thanks Hi/Lo! And Yeah, I totally agree about gain noise being different at different spots of the gain knobs of the 70d! That's why I wanted to note where the gain knobs were in regards to the clock! On the High/High+ gain modes, the noise at different positions on the knob was def more audible than the LOW/MID gain modes, which we're a little quieter IMO all over the gain knob!

I never got to setup at my Grandparents on Sunday afternoon :( Since it was Father's Day, there was all kinds of stuff going on there, and there weren't as many cars going by as a typical Sunday down there, so it will have to wait until this coming Sunday when I go back to my Grandparents 8) I am HOPEFULLY taping Phish/St. Paul on Wednesday night[I think I just need a GA Floor ticket], so I will hopefully have some new recordings to share when I get back on Thursday! ;D

Anyway, I hope my post above can give yinz all an idea of the noise levels at all of the different gain modes of the 70d :) Hopefully its quiet enough for your applications, because I think it sounds great at LOW/MID gain modes for the amplified/loud type of shows I tape!
