« on: July 04, 2004, 05:54:16 PM »

XY for sure if you are far to the left or right. But since I hate XY with my mk41's I tend to use the DIN Bar and angle the mics some.

I have used a custom config with great success.  I usually run DIN.  I was off center one show and had my mics in an L pattern with DIN separation.  The small part of the "L" was pointed to the outside of the closer stack.  The long part of the "L"  I had aiming across to the outside of the far stack.  I positioned the mics so the mic pointing to the outside of the closer stack was further away from that stack.  The long part of the "L" was pointed to the outside of the far stack but closer to it to make up for the distance difference.  Tape came out great.  Guess you just have to experiment.

iffin' you're running off a single stack then there is not really an image to capture so xy or ab works fine  ::)

This thread(and recording) makes a pretty good argument for ORTF.

I like Vanilla .......but, ORTF is trying to capture an image and I don't see much of an image coming from a single stack (read MONO from one side of the stage) when compared to 2 stacks w/ some separation.  You can run AB or XY when stack taping (of course one can record any way one chooses).   The guy running ORTF in front of the stack is using, IMO, what is easiest to him (which is just as good when capturing a single stack).   ;D

also, ive ran some weirder configs, i HATE xy personally, so i wont really run it, no image, so what ive done is run a 90* angle w/ a smaller spacing in caps, like 3-4 inches instead of 7-8 inches :)

werked out great for al and the trans when i was WAY FOB in a small cafe ;)

I'd go X-Y...all the time.  After all, this is going to give you the best point-source for stereo reproduction during playback- and thats what you (we're) after, no?

I ran the modified X/Y with the center point at the center of the stage (I was pretty far to the left) last weekend with really good results. I'd previously only ran DIN or ORTF with the KM140s, but may try X/Y a few more times. The venue was *very* bass heavy though...so cutting out some of that may have been another reason why the tape sounded so good.

BINGO! This works for me also! I normally hate running XY, but in this condition it works very well. Especially in bassy sounding venues!

If imaging is not an issue..   id run one PAS and the other just outside the stack..

in my experience the oktavas come out really boomy sounding when running in x/y..and if you're running to the side by a wall..that's just asking for it
