Jecklin disc - It's Allgood!
« on: July 11, 2004, 09:24:27 PM »
I got my Jecklin disc made just in time for the Allgood Festy this weekend :)
I've got a lot of stuff to go through, and some gems in the grab too.
I'll post more a bit later when I've scraped off the dust and spun some tapes.
But, at first listen, I've been shown the light!
There are some pics that I hope the other good Dr. will post for us too...

Good to hear, can't wait to try it out myself.

played back on earphones or speakers, M? Is it the soundfield that is so amazing or what? From very far back, how would one of these effect one's recording? (I'm damn jealous you get to record so close up.)

Here is my little Jecklin...
http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=22149.0
As you can see, we are wayyyy FOB.
I arrived just as the first act began on Friday and set up in the section.  After that I ran up front.
I think to get the best separation with this method you will need to run very close.
If you look across a line drawn from the front of the mic to the front of the disc and can see the opposite stack, you aren't close enough... I think this method would excel in on-stage taping.

Check out the Allgood PA.  What an awesome sound system they provided this year!

My disc is LP sized.  ~12"
It's cut from Xacto foam board and covered with faux fur.
It attaches to the stand with a 3/8" bolt and a threaded rod coupler.

Yep, it's Jim here, mostly lurking... stealth like, ya'know...

I'd love to compare how the spaced omni's came out.  Spear was the loudest thing I've heard since NMAS under an 8' ceiling at Mississippi Nights!  It's an awesome recording.  I'll seed it if policy permits.

This is my first omni experience.  I usually put myself in a position where my sub cards perform well.  That's not close enough for the omnis!  It is hard to believe what the bass response will do to your 'normal' recording settings.  The bass levels caused me to lower my V3 settings by 10db compared to what I use for the 43s.  Many complain that my levels are to low, requiring too much volume control.  If you have thought that in the past then you won't like my Jecklin omni recordings.  But, if you want a kick in the pants with window rattling bass, crank it, and you're there!

I had a giant door opened into the world of Persian music last night. I met several major performers last night, and they loved the concept of low profile recording. One of these was a music producer, who had a multi-track mix w/ foh-send after the recording mix. He flat out said that my 5" disc, just blew away his 8 mic mix, and that he would be contacting me about future gigs. He says he produces lots of Persian music, and he gave me a cd by his father, who is evidently a famous musician of his genre.
So lasts nights gig may have poisitive repercussions for a ong while.

Dr. FOB, I patched from you Sun. morning for the Campbell Bros.  I'll tell ya, this tape is soooo nice.  I have to turn the bass down a good bit b/c my playback system doesn't deal well with that kind of stuff.  In general the image is damn fine.  I ran  spread omnis ( 6 to 8 ft) for most of the weekend.  I was in the not so way FOB section on Sunday running a 40" spread for the Allstars.  I got to say that these two types of omni recordings are like night and day.   Whatever they both freakin kick major ass!!

Man...now I have to make one too...!!! (looks around room for large round objects...)

What kind of scenario is this best suited for...?

Would you want to use this technique with a diffuse soundfield? Like a large clanky room...

I could be wrong but I thought that the PA/etc. was handled through Raven Sound out of Erie, PA.. I could be mixing this up with the Buffalo Pier 6 moe. show though :P
