http://www.dpamicrophones.com/ click "microphone university"

that's generally a pretty informative page. basically the different patterns are verbal descriptors of the "directionality" of the mcrophone.

Looking for personal experiences with different Caps.  What have you found to work at Major outdoor venues (Deer Creek, Camden,PNC ETC) Then the smaller more personal theater type shows would require a different cap.  I'm trying to determine the uses of mySP C4's . What will I use each cap for.  I stand using the cardoids in outdoor setting and most indoor events.  More acustical events that done have alot of loud sound I'd use the Omni caps.  Correct me if I'm wronge.

It's all just personal preference based on your own experiences and what sound YOU like... here are my default settings...

From a distance in an ampitheatre with a roof I always default to Hypers

In a small bar/club... I like hypers as well as they cut out some of the relfections from the walls.

In a good sounding theatre up front I like cards or subcards

In a good sounding theatre from the balcony cards can sound good, from the back of the floor I go to the hypers.

Outdoors open air I use the least directional pattern I have, omni's, subs or cards...

fob (indoors or outdoors) cards or subcards, or even omni's

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

Tim
thanks for the advice from your personal experiencies.  My mics wont have hyper caps for a couple more months now so, I will use my Cardoids mostly for the upcoming Ratdog Tour.  Small theaters and casinos.   If anyone have been to any of the upcoming gig localtions I will kindly appreseate insider venue info.
