Who makes the all around best mics, and what model is the most all around best to use?

Who would win a fight between Lemmy and god?

It's a trick question...there is no best mic.

there is no such thing as best mics.what you could do is get a plethora of mics ,as you could select a microphone according to what you think might be the best for the job.Think of predator 2 ,where danny glover opens the trunk of his car,and looks over what weapon he should use against the colombians ;D

I've used akg 391s, neumann km100+ak43, ak40, ak50, neumann u89s, soundfield st-250, and now schoeps cmc6+mk4

What are you trying to do? What kind of bands are you recording? Stealth or open? FOB or Section? Do you want accurate or a bit of color?

there is no best mic for every situation. give us a better idea of what you're trying to do and we'll be able to guide you in a diection...

"Best" is so hard to define.

Depending on the situation, different mics will be "best":  A large diagphram ADK-TL is not "best" for stealth, as it is about the size of a soda bottle, yet the ADK TL is a fantastic mic.

Perhaps some input from you could help narrow the field:

What do you intend to do/record?
How much do you want to spend on mics?
How much do you want to spend on other gear?

I'd say the best mic is the one that makes tape that you like to listen to.  Look around for shows with different sources trade for em or B&P for em them listen to them a lot and see what sounds best to you.  one does not have to blow a $1000 on mics to get a sweet tape.  Good luck welcome & +T

there are no best mics, just people that know how to use them best ;)

that manley is about $5k+ I believe.
they make a stereo mic just like that.  same capsules mounted coincident.  I posted a link to it a while back in here.
sweeeetttt....

the best mics for concert taping?

would be the most versitle mics you could find...allowing for every possible stereo configutaion and polar pattern.  to get that, you need to spend a shitload of money.
the cheapest you can get away with is $650 for the matched Oktava MC-012 kit w/omni, card and hyper caps...but that's not exactly every polar pattern.  probably the best mics for the money though.  they lack the refined sound that high-end mics from other countries have, but they are fine in a noisey rock show environment.  many people here have made shitloads of fantastic recordings with them.

if money isn't an object.  the ST-250 is the best mic on the planet for accurate measurement of acoustic dimensions...be it live music or the space shuttles volume at take off.
but thats just my opinion.  and your looking at $4k.  but if you want an accurate 3 dimensional representation of an acoustic event, then the buck stops here.

there are better mics out there for some jobs.
the "best mic"..is the one that pleases your ear.  and you'll learn how to use what you have and pull good recordings.

there are certainly "best mics" for certain jobs, but we are talking studio examples when you micing one thing, like a piano or a guitar or someone singing.
