Hi all,
When travelling on the plane, and you carry on your gear, how do you handle the DAT's? Will the security scanners ruin the tapes..either blank or with data on them? Should they be considered film and handled as such?
-
dont worry about them, no problems at all with DAT tape. The only film that even needs to be worried about is 1600 ISO or above anyways.
-
But a note, if you're carrying SLA Batteries. Carry the Material Data Sheet with them. Eco-Charge includes a D.O.T. Certificate with thier batteries. I had a "small" hassle coming back from Dead NYE in Oakland Airport. They made me open my case, put a battery in the bomb sniffer and were asking me "what all this stuff is". I whipped out the Eco-Charge DOT statement, and they waved me through. In Lauderdale & Atlanta, they didn't even look twice at the case when it went thru the scanner.
The new CHECKED LUGGAGE SCANNERS will fog ALL FILM. The carry on stuff is supposed to be OK for film, and FINE for DAT, but I would hand carry my film anyway (if I wasn't shooting digital, and I didn't archive the CF to laptop and CD-R right after shooting)...
Rick
Looking forward to seeing y'all at the Warfield next Monday...

yah checked is different for film, though out of everyone i know who shoots (a number of pros) no one would ever send their rolls through beneath

I have a homemade SLA battery and cable i use for my d8..will this be an issue? If i have to, I guess i could prove all the gear works by hooking it up.
-
in the archive section there are the forms to print to keep with your SLA. btw just a small hint, when you bring it through and they ask you what it is. Tell them it is a "Sealed Lead Battery" don't use the word acid- it freaks them out

Uhhhh...yeah, what Jonny said. Too slow, I guess... :)

That'd probably do the trick. Or, simply find out the manufacturer of your SLA and download the appropriate MSDS sheets. In the Archival Info forum we have MSDS sheets for EcoCharge, Panasonic, and Powersonic SLAs. But others are probably easily found on the manufacturer's website.

That bothers me a little that they have you prove what it is by hooking it up. What if it really WERE a "device" (can't use the 'B' word in an airport) and hooking it up set it off at a crowded security checkpoint?

It is not the policy of the Thousands Standing Around agency to actually think about whether or not their procedures make sense or not.

DO NOT USE THE WORD BATTERY
call it a power supply.
-
I'll be heading down to SF for the Melvins show on 03/04.... wondering how much fun I'll have getting my rig on the plane as well!

99% of the time it's no big deal... tell the screeners what you've got before they even scan it, be nice and polite about it and it shouldn't be a problem.
-
I don't tell 'em DICK. Between the recording gear, camera gear, and Laptop - if they can't figger out I'm a "toy freak" then why invite trouble. I've been thru security 8 times with the new rig (another coming up friday), and only been asked to open the recording gear case once (and with all those wires, if I were the TSA Scanner Dude, I'd make EVERY taper get hand searched...)

Are you serious??????? What about the word battery is so threatening? (not doubting...just seems a bit over the top)
-
I'm dead serious... we're talking about dealing with the TSA not exactly a bunch of Phi Betta Kappa's working for the TSA.
power supply sounds professional.
-
I guess so....sounding professional when dealing with that type of situation I'm sure is a good idea. Thanks for the tip!

Traveling in the last few months, it's been sort of 70-30 (no search - search) as to whether they stop me to look through the stuff. I DO tell them as I hand them the bag that it is recording equipment...seems to have cut down on the times I get the full search. Most of the airports I've been through, the TSA's seem to have a familiarity with the equipment used for recording, judging by the decreasing numbers of questions I get. They are most concerned if they are unable to see through something on the scan (e.g., lead batteries). I have yet to have the need to pull out the MSDS; but I'd still have it with you!
FWIW, the TSA's seemed to be most concerned about my shoes and the Leatherman's tool I forgot to take out of my bag (went back and put it in my car). Give yourself extra time and just be polite: seems to go a whole lot easier that way.
-
I'll second that advice to sound and act professional.
Long before TSA, I used to carry my gear all jammed in a padded bag or backpack. I would get searched, questioned, please turn it on, etc. The CP4 capsules seemed to really bother them. Then I got a hard shell equipment case and put everything in foam cutouts. After that they never bothered me again and at one airport where my bag got searched closely every previous time, the security guy gently caught the equipment case before it could slide down the track and handed it to me saying "I know how expensive this stuff is."

I've been hassled over my at8410's,let everything else go without a glance and pulled them out of my backpack and swabed them! :rotflmao:

I've run tapes through the carry-on scanners countless times with no issues. Not sure about the new checked luggage scanners. They seem to cause more problems w/ film, so they may be bad news for DAT tapes as well....not sure. One of my SLAs is home built and I've never had any problems with it.
