Title: looking for a dvd-r drive
Post by: kkaye on February 02, 2004, 09:33:03 PM
Hey now Im looking to get an internal dvd writer , does anyone have any suggestions?

I also want to be able to burn cds, to replace my old cdrw drive, do I need a "dual format" drive and what does that mean??

Im looking at this one:
Sony 8x max internal dvd+R dual format drive
(what is dual format?)

dvd+r 8x write, 4x rewrite, 12x read
dvd-r 4 x write, 4xrewrite , 12x read
cd-rw 40 x write, 24x rewrite 40x read

My main focus would be  burning movies & audio cds

Any tips? Thanks

i've got a Sony 4x and works great. i've heard great things about Plextor, Panasonic and NEC writers.

dual format means that the drive will burn both DVD-R and +R media.

The plextor 708a meets those specs & IMO is a fantastic burner.  Sony's are nice but i didn't really like my old Panasonic 1XDVD-R, burnt too many coasters.  You don't necessarily need a dual format burner.  DVD-R & DVD+R are just different formats, again IMO niether really having any real advantages over one another.  Just depends on if you want the ability to write/read the other format or not.  If your gonna trade discs with other folks it's nice to know it'll be compatible.  Here are links to both those burners:

Sony DRU-530a: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-131-216&catalog=5&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

Plextor BPS-708a:  http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-131-323&catalog=5&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

Both are about the same price, only difference is the Plextor is an OEM.  & you could probably do a bit better on price for both @ a different retailer.

NEC ND-2500A DVD±RW Writer
(8x/4x/12x DVD+RW, 8x/4x/12x DVD-RW, 32x/16x/40x CD-RW)

it'll write both + and - dvdr media at 8x, and burn cds at 32x.  i can get one delivered to my door for $115 (non oem) from Future Power PC.  Your price might be a little different depending on your location.  You can read reviews of the product on pricegrabber, and reviews of the seller.

I have the NEC 1300a that burns both at 4x, have never had a problem with it.  two of my friends just bought the 2500a and they love them.

i just got a LITE ON LDW811S Dual mode (meaning it does both + and - types of media also does cd's).  120 @ mwave.com (no affiliation thats just where i get my computer gear)

I have used it for some moves and archiving a bunch of SHN's

Had this for a few months and it works great.

We also have a LG 4x dula mode at work don't know the model number but it works good as well.

I have an NEC ND-2500A and like it a lot.  It can burn Fuji 4X DVD-R discs at 8X w/ no problems that I can tell so far. -d
