Just for casual use -- like movies, What's good for under $1k?
-
projectorreviews.com has some useful info. The Optoma HD20 would probably be my choice on that budget, or I'd find an extra couple bills for a Mitsubishi HC4000 or Panasonic PT-AR100. I'd lean toward the Panasonic if the room isn't pitch black, so light output becomes very important.

I just bought a Mits Hc4000. Absolutely excellent. I believe it was about $1200. Full HD and great black levels.
If you need more opinions head over to www.avsforum.com and browse the under $3000 projector tread.

newby logistic questions...
i'll be using netbook for the source. the ceilings here are pretty high, maybe 13 feet. if you mount a projector on the ceiling and use a netbook for source, what do people use for long power and video cable runs. also what connector do you use from the netbook, vga?
-
I have no idea if this projector is any good, but it seems like a good deal for what it is.

It depends what connectors are available on your projector and netbook.
Ideally, you want to use HDMI.

I had to read almost to the end of the thread before I realized this thread is about video projectors . . . and not movie projectors~! I was thinking... "They still manufacture movie projectors?" And then I saw the prices and thought... "That seems really high for a movie projector."

HDMI / DVI are good out to about 30 feet reliably. For longer runs, VGA will be better. Power? A long 3 prong grounded edison cable.
Monoprice.com is a good source for cables.

can the optoma play directly from a usb drive or sd card?
