I believe that I've narrowed my problem down to a amplifier issue. My AKG 460 generates random noise that sounds something like wind. I originally thought it was a poor connection between cable and mic, but I moved my equipment around in many configurations and I'm left to believe that it's my amplifier.
Does anybody have any experience with this? Or any suggestions on how I might approach fixing the situation?

It it a "whooshing" sound? That's usually dirt or moisture on the capsule membrane. Have you recorded in the rain or high humidity lately?

Its not in the capsule because I have switched out my capsules and amplifiers. It happens in the same amplifier regardless of capsule. Its more like an abrasive "static" noise like something is has a poor connection. If I tap the mic body while recording it goes crazy with static, while the other body seems fine when tapping it.

Went back to the testing board and no longer convinced its my mic. Nothing makes sense!?! I'll keep troubleshooting.

Did you tighten the screw near the XLR connector? It holds the pins tight and if that screw backed out a little bit, the pins will be loose to the touch, and tightening down that screw should fix it. If you find the screw and pins are tight, it's likely an internal connection issue. Good luck!
