Preamp Overload
« on: February 29, 2004, 10:46:46 PM »
I have C1000s running into a Mixpad 4. I taped Guster last night and got some pretty wicked distortion. I really just put this rig together and have had very very very little practice with it. I had my preamps running as hot as they could. 50 db of gain. Can you overload the preamps? I think this is what I may have done. I am posting a short sample to give an idea of what I mean. The max SPL on these mics is able 130 db so I do not think it is the mics themselves. Thanks. Any input is appreciated. Thank you all so much for being such a helpful community.

If mass communications blend together harmoniously, and often unnoticeably, art, politics, religion, and philosophy with commercials, they bring these realms of culture to their common denominator—the commodity form. The music of the soul is also the music of salesmanship.

i always ran the levels as follows:

1st gain:  20db (this is all memory i could be wrong)
2nd gain:  just 0db
3rd gain:  just under 0db

d8 level:  just so it was under 0db's on the level meter

i recommend running phantom power with the mixpad.  Just gives you a better understanding of where your levels are at.

Ill send you some tapes of differenet level settings.

Did you listen to the clip? Do you think that is what happend... What do you mean by first gain, second gain, third gain? I am assuming this

1st gain=mic trim
2nd gain=channel gain
3rd gain=main level
