Edirol R4 Pro with a solid state anyone?
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:52:30 AM »
Hello everyone,

this is actually my first post on this forums and I would like to thank you all for reading this and for any help you could give me in the future.
I'm a luky owner of a Edirol R4 Pro for few years and I would like to use it for more years to come.
I'm trying to install an internal Solid State drive instead of the original one to avoid having the noise of the data being saved on disk on very quite recordings.
I tried few hard drives with no success and I would like to know if anyone managed to install a SSD and could recommend the brand and model to use.

Many thanks in advance.

Emanuele

Hi Emanuele,

This isn't something I've tried (I've got an R-44), but it might be worth checking the formatting of the original drive (I'd guess it'd be FAT32, but may be something like UDF) on your computer.  It's probably a PATA interface, rather than SATA.  Also get in touch with Edirol, they may be able to help.  Let us know how you get on

Richard

Edirol is pretty much useless in helping out and they don't have any clue.
The best thing they did is trying to sell a new hard drive (the same original one) at ten times the price I can find on the web.

Finally I made it through though.

I got an adaper to use CF cards:

http://www.amazon.com/Syba-Connectivity-44-pin-Compact-Adapter/dp/B0036DDXUM?&tag=din0a-20

that I filled up with a couple of 32GB from Trascent:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360400106764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

and it work very well.
At the moment I'm trying to make a long recording to see what's happen when the file is reaching 2GB in lenght.

Before getting that adapter I already ordered a similar adapter through eBay but I'm still waiting to arrive. Once I'll have it I'll give it a go to see if it works:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170625457235?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

In the meantime I played with success with another adapter for SD cards:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350345458838?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

is working but I tried just with a 16GB card. I suppose is working also with bigger cards and in case you like it more than the others you have to find your way to lock it into the R4pro.

Finally my recorder doesn't suffer of the noise produced by tha data saved on the disk anymore, giving to sound a bit step forward in quality.
Yuppieee!!!!!

After few tests and use I can now say that all the mentioned adapters are working very well
BUT
the two doucle CF card adapter are recognising jus one card, so doubling the cards to have double space doesn't work.
If you want 64GB in your recorder, get a 64GB card, not two 32GB.
;D
