Cap care.
« on: May 21, 2012, 11:40:23 AM »
I have these "vintage" AKGs that I bought.. sound awesome... etc...

The other day while carelessly removing them from their mounts I pulled the mesh off of the caps. No harm done other than I've revealed that the foam inside of the mesh has rotted away.

I've decided that I will clean the mesh out as well as I can but is there anything I can, should or should not do to the cap itself?

I've been told already that caned air could break the cap so I'm glad I didn't do that. Any other suggestions?

Send them to AKG...

Really, unless you don't care about them that much, I think it is better not to screw around with them.  Mics have some delicate components.  I am sure AKG's service won't be cheap, but they will have the knowledge (and the parts) to do it properly.

10-4.

That was pretty much my conclusion after I got all the leftover foam from the mesh. The other cap's mesh didn't move at all so I didn't force the issue.

If it don't fit, don't force it!

i've used richard land for akg repair and i would recommend him.  around the south, he is the man for akg repair.  he isn't cheap but his work is top notch and he is rather timely.  not sure where you are, he's in tennessee.
