Who has got the longest working NJB3?
« on: November 04, 2004, 06:56:12 PM »

Kind of like the old Toyota commercials where they paraded around car
owners with 100K, 200K, 800K miles on their Toyotas, I was wondering
how long people's JB3's have lasted.  Either in terms of months, years,
hours of use, or number of shows taped, whatever!

I've taped at least 250 gigs worth of shows with mine. It's been over two years that I've had it.

got mine in april '03.  i'll be closing in on 2 years soon.  so far so good, other than the pops and clicks i get on occasion from not formatting the drive.

I think my first concert recorded with my JB3 was Govt Mule 10.19.02, so a little over two years ago.  I record 60 to 70 shows per year and generally record the opening band.  I also use my JB3 for transfers since I've never bothered to get a bit perfect digital soundcard to do transfers.  So conservatively, I've put on about 500 recording hours, probably more like 600 or maybe 700 hours.

Never had any problems, other than a few times of operator error (forgetting to clear enough space on the hard drive for the show, not having the optical cable fully seated).  All in all, it has been far more reliable than any of the 5 portable DAT decks I've owned.

Oh, BTW, I've only formatted the drive once in all this time, and I have never gotten any clicks or pops in my recordings, from a fragmented drive or anything else.

I got my 20GB unit years ago at BB mainly for storing mp3's. It sat in my closet close to a year before I started recording with it. Now I do lots of recording with it, play it every day in my car and five times a week at work. Holds two batteries and I only need to charge it once or twice a week. I get a ton of use out of mine with no problems without much pampering the JB3.

I see refurbished units for sale on eBay but I tell ya mine's built like a tank. I've only had to open the unit once to clean the fly wheel.

Had a couple shows where it inserted pop samples, but those were easy to fix as I did not lose any of the recording.

Once I started cleaning up the drive regularly I have had no problems with it. Outside of some user error that is. 8(

I've had mine for a bit over a year.   I've recorded approx 300 hours on it.  Also use it everyday in my car.  I've lost two of the rubber feet, aside from that, never had an issue what-so-ever with it.   I've never formatted or defragged the drive.

i got mine in february of 04 and have taped about 30 shows and used it to transfer hundreds of dats, i have never had issues w/ it putting pops or clicks in the recording, because as soon as i transfer it, flac the master and burn it, its cleared off of the hd and formatted

one thing i have been noticing tjho, sometimes when i reformat, it wont reboot and i have to reload the os :P it just says 'firmware problem' and goes into rescue mode :P but once i re-install the os and let her rip, shes all good

and a few paperclips can be godsent when the darn thing freezes up :)

i dunno how many hrs i have on it, maybe about 700 hrs or so prolly easily

'April 03, 70+ shows, 100 hours I guess. Used for stealthing and lives in a pleatherette case.

Can overheat if kept in jacket pocket and doesn't like the mosh pit much (shuts down under extreme conditions). No dropped samples and I've never reformatted it. Really pleased with it.

Just got Nomad no. 2 so I'll see if it behaves the same.

I got a can of stuff from Radio Shack ... Contact/Control Cleaner & Lubricant worked wonders. I opened up my Nomad Jukebox 3. The cleaner is under great pressure so don't spray directly. Spray in a cup first and get some q-tips. With a Q-tip addes a few drops sparingly with a few quick blasts for a dust blaster. Did that several times, turning and pushing the wheel. I didn't wait very long to dry. The can's instructions say wait five minutes. A few blasts of dust blaster (air can) and I waited about 30-60 seconds, closed up everything and it works like new.

I better mention that if you plan on opening your JB3 then be very carefull with the display. It's brittle and many folks have cracked theirs. So be very careful when working with the screws around the display. Get the right size phillips driver for the small screws to prevent slipping. word to the wise

I'm sure I haven't put as many miles on it as a lot of you guys, but I picked mine up in late '02/early '03 I think.  still holding up well enough to be a backup/sbd patching deck.
