Topic: would you transfer this way

For every show I tape I transfer my 24/96 files from my laptop to my DAW. Here's how I do it:  flac > jb3 > DAW. What I am wondering is if I could skip the flac encoding stage and safely send the raw .wav files from lappy > jb3 > DAW. My only concern is the data could be corrupted / messed up and by not flac'ing them I couldn't test/verify the files once they got on my DAW. Please let me know if you have any experience in this area, thanks.

ps, I spent 5+ hours (plus swear words) trying to set up a network between my laptop and DAW using a crossover cable with no success.

Yep, should be ok. A .wav is a data file just like a .flac file is, just bigger. What I'd do is .md5 the wav file, move it over, move it back and see if it checks out...

what DAW are you working with?  what's preventing you from transfering the raw wav data directly from your laptop to your DAW? 

in regards to your question....what greenone said.  you are essentially using your JB3 as an external hard drive.

another option would be to get a hub or network switch which may make it easier to set up a network you can transfer files over.  i've never done it with just a crossover cable so i'm not sure what might cause problems, but if you set up a network and join all pc's to the same workgroup then you should be good.  might need to make sure you're logging into all machines as administrator as well...

i was going to suggest the same, but i didn't know if your DAW had networking capabilities. 

at school we have a dedicated HD recorder and then pipe all the files over to our Pro Tools DAW via a crossover cable.  speeds are around 3mb/sec....which is ok but not super fast.

a network would be sweet.

Neither of these computers have any anti-virus /spyware software. Would it be a risk hooking both up to the dsl main hub and setting up a network? No risk of viruses?

Depending on what kind of router you have/want I disallow my DAW from any incoming or outgoing internet traffic in the routers settings.  My DAW is hooked up to my home network (4 wired, 2 wireless).  I also only allow network access to and from the DAW from one machine on which I have AV/Firewall/etc. 

Have you tried using a non-crossover network cable?

did you setup your lappy as the host/admin and your DAW as the user?

at school our recorder is the host with it's ip address being xx.xxx.xxx.1  and our Pro Tools computer is xx.xxx.xxx.2.  We then use an FTP program on the PT computer to pull the files from the recorder.

if so i can't really think of anything else to help you out at this point in time.  sorry.....i hope you can figure something out!

Do both computers have usb2 (or firewire) connectors?  If so, another way to go about this could be to simply pick up (or put together) a usb2 (or firewire) compatible external hard drive.

I also thought that windows xp had a wizard that made it pretty easy to directly connect 2 computers via usb2 (an instant network, if you will).

Finally, I'd recommend creating a md5 of the wav/flac/whatever on your laptop before transferring to your daw, so you can confirm md5 integrity on your daw after transfer.
