Sounddevices digital I/O
« on: April 09, 2006, 11:48:50 PM »
I wish to put an 192kHz computer generated file on a machine and play it back so that I can record it with another device.

Does anybody here know if the Sounddevices 722 digital output goes to 192kHz ?

Some devices record at 192kHz, but their digital out is limited to 96kHz.

The manual says "Any file recorded by the 722 can be played back, including all uncompressed and MP3 files."  While this doesn't actually address 192 kH files recorded on another machine, it would indicate that it can handle at least its own 192 kH files.  Never gone above 96 kH myself, though.  [edit add] Discussion of the digital output bus (p18 of manual) has no indication of a limit to 96 kH.  But I'll give it a try if no one else has anything to add from experience.

FYI, the m-audio fw-410 can output a 24/192 s/pdif signal, but it can only record 24/96. they can be found cheap on ebay.

Got this reply from sounddevices:

"...the 7-Series recorders are capable of true 192kHz playback from their
digital outputs!"

Maybe not.

     dynamic range: 108dB (A-weighted)
     THD: 0.00281%

     sample rates: 32kHz to 192kHz (192kHz on line outputs 1 & 2 only)
                        44.1kHz, 48kHz and 96kHz (S/PDIF I/O)

     operating level: -10dB, unbalanced

The only soundcard I found that would do this was one from rme-audio:

I've confirmed that it does output 192 on the digi out several months ago by accident.  I tried to play a 192 source via digi out to my Denon AVR4800 (which can't do more than 96) and it won't lock to the signal, but will lock to a 96 source.
