Photoshop question...
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:33:10 AM »
Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to have Photoshop automatically apply a series of tasks to a large number of images.

I would like to:

1. Apply Auto Levels
2. Apply Auto Contrast
3. Change Image size to 800x600
4. Save for Web in a particular folder.

Thanks.

Yup. Just record an action (the equivalent of a macro) – plenty of sites explaining that to be found on Google.
Out of the game … for now?

Usually the answer to, "Can I [blank] with Photoshop" is YES.

With CS2, I would use a combination of a recorded action for the levels, and File/Scripts/Image Processor for resizing and saving.  You could also put the resizing step into the action.  Recording an action is simple: first create a new action by clicking the appropriate icon on the actions palette, give it a name, perform the step(s) you want to record, then just hit the STOP button on same palette.

Favorite generic quote from Archive.org:
"This recording is SICK--it's almost as good as a soundboard!"

Mike, you can create a Droplet which contains all the actions you want to perform (resize, color adjust, etc).  Then you drop the Droplet on the folder containg the images and Voila!  It's great for reated actions on multiple images.

Actions handle this fairly well.  I've had some issues resizing and saving for web using an action though as I've never figured out how to deal with the orientation of the image when resizing.   FWIW Lightroom can automate this and remains aspect (portrait/landscape) aware during the resize.

If you have never checked it out the Photoshop TV podcast kicks hiney.  Lots of great Photoshop tutorials.

Jake: What's this?
Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.
