monopod recs
« on: November 30, 2007, 09:04:00 AM »
So, it's that time of year again, to give family member gift ideas.  Well, I'm tired of lugging around my tripod for everthing when a monopod could easily fit the bill for 60% of it.  So, I'm looking at monopods.  My question/s are this:

All my other stands, photo and taping are manfrotto's.  Should I stick with this or can I get more bang for the buck with another brand like giottos, etc..?

I would like to keep the cost under $100, preferrebly under $80, so that will factor into the decision.

Fairly compact, a quick release head is a must as well as a swivel/tilt head.

Any recs to fit this bill?  There are a ton on bhphoto, but I want a hands on rec.  Thanks guys!

I have bought a cheap 10$ monopod on ebay, with just a screw on top without any option of tilting or anything. Just a stick with a screw, it is 68" tall.

I am very happy about it, would just like it to 4" taller.

I have been taping a fiew shows in the crows with that.

Best wishes

Steen

thanks for the response.  I thought about that route but I need a pro monopod with ability to rotated the head both horizontaly and vertically for different shots.  I would consider this a biz expense as most of what I do is for future display so it's worth it to me to have a good one.  However, I do have a budget, which is under 100.  That's where the manufacturer names come into play.  Manfrottos are more expensive.

Can't beat that price... seems like most monopods are way overpriced. I've been very happy with my dynatrans ebay mic stand.

I've used a buddy's monopod with a bogen quick action ball head and really liked it... I'm pretty sure it is the 3265.  I haven't used the smaller bogen ball heads.

That might be what I'm looking for.  Thanks!

I use a Manfrotto 680B with an Acratech clamp.  I use Arca Swiss type plates for my camera and video camera.  My son has a 681B with a Manfrotto 3232 tiltable head for his spotting scope.  His monopod has a RRS clamp.  You don't need the Arca Type clamps to use these two monopods.  The 680B is more compact--about 24 inches.

680B

681B

Are you using the Manfrotto quick release plates?

yes, but can't remember the model number, it's in my trunk.   Thanks for the links.  That's in my price range.

Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.

I decided I don't need two heads, so I just swap out my manfrotto ball head w/ quick release between the two (tripod and monopod).

do you have the same ball head shown above in this thread?  thats what I use on my tripod (except mine is green)..but i am not sure if I would like that on a monopod.  If you do have the same one...how do you like it on the mono?

No, not the one above, though it does look mighty nice.  Mighty spendy too  ;)

My head is a manfrotto 484RC2
Tripod is manfrotto 190XDB
Monopod is manfrotto 680b
