Topic: SP-CMC-2 windscreens

Hey Now,

Had my heart broken from wind noise with my new SP-CMC-2 mics with roll off filter recording Hot Rize this past weekend. There was only a slight breeze, and I was quite surprised at the amount of wind picked up on the tapes. Ive seen threads about windscreens for the SP 4's, but wasn't sure if this was also a viable thread for the SP 2's. Basically I need better windscreens, because the ones they came with, barely did anything.

Also, because I arrived late, and was at a distance from the stage I ran my Sony D8 (also new to me) on auto, I didn't set the levels. Now the levels weren't high, middle ground from the auto setting, yet on the high vocal harmonys the mics distorted. Is this because I should have manually run the levels lower, or do I need something more than the roll of filter to power the mics?

Oh yeah, and was it a total bone head move to run the D8 on auto, and not manually set the levels?

CMC2s are pretty sensitive to wind noise, I've had a couple of recordings badly affected by wind, or fierce air conditioning.

Rycote make windscreens for CMC2s, I checked this week. They're expensive, so I have some "cousin it" material on order to try and make my own. If it works out I'll post here.

£22 each + VAT here in the UK. Dunno where you are but you may find them a little cheaper elsewhere.

I wouldn't call you a bone head, but you will definitely get better recordings running line-in and manual.

Good to know.  I plan on recording a stealth outdoor show end of July and have been planning my attack for how best to record outdoors, and getting a better windscreen was number one on my priority list.  The prices of those Rycote windscreens seem a little excessive so I will try to construct/locate something cheaper.
