Stand Recommendations
« on: June 20, 2023, 09:31:40 AM »
I am in the process of putting together a new open taping rig after a long break.

I have a lot things figured out, but I need a new stand or two.

I will be taping Phish at Dicks this year and I believe most of my taping will be done at venues with a capacity of more than 2500 (but I might occasionally go somewhere smaller).

Any thoughts for me?  I think I used to have a 12 foot Bogan and a 7 foot bogan for smaller venues - maybe??

Thanks - Aaron

there's  a fairly thorough thread discussing this.  Typically people seem to like grabbing a good clamp, with an extension pole, and then a sturdy but small base stand.  Venues often won't let you have anything on the ground, so being able to clamp to a rail or arm rest is handy.  I like the 9 solutions clamp and the matthews extension bar personally.  I do have a number of different stands, from a tall air cushioned stand to a small 6 ft ish manfrotto stand, but I rarely bother bringing them.

For Dick's you will need the 7 foot stand.

At this point all tapers have abandoned the OTS and moved FOB.

Bring your stand if you'd like, but also make sure you have the ability to clamp since not every FOB taper can run their own stand.

At this point I'm running just my 7 foot stand, and a superclamp/extension pole for any place I can clamp.

It should be noted that in many venues more non-taping fans have figured out that many "tapers sections" in venues are a great place to sit (good sound, good sightlines), so I will try to bring both stands. I have recently run into a few situations where I would like to clamp, but the people sitting in those seats aren't willing to move (which is fine), so I've had to move another row back where you can't clamp, and run a normal stand.

Good advice - thanks guys.  For dicks, I am just bringing a stand and a clamp.

Mike - do I need a clear bag at Dicks?

Thanks!

Didn't last year. Hopefully it stays the same.
