H120 successful SD/SDHC card mod (cheaper media!)
« on: December 16, 2008, 04:53:28 PM »
I found this at misticriver.net:
Quote
Just wanted to let everybody know that I found a way to use SD cards in a CF modded H120. It's quite simple really: I bought a generic SD/SDHC to CFII adapter off Ebay (there's a picture of it attached just in case) and used that to connect a 4GB SD card to my CF modded H120. You have to squeeze a little to close the casing, but overall it fits fine.
There were some strange file system problems at first, but then I formatted the SD card in the H120 using Panasonic's SD formatter and reinstalled Rockbox 3.0 via Rockbox Utility - now it works like a charm!
So far I only tried an SD card, as I don't have an SDHC card, but I see no reason, why SDHC cards shouldn't work. In case somebody gets this to work with an SDHC card, please let me know!

Happy modding, Bananenflanke

I don't think this was posted here yet, and it definitely hasn't gotten the attention it deserves over at rockbox.org.
The main advantage for "our" usage it is cheaper media, and perhaps lower power consumption.

One concern is the fact that most SD brands and models are still untested/undocumented, so we don't know for sure yet which work. I hope this will be addressed over at rockbox, with some help...

Neat! Now all we need is to start testing which SD varieties are recognized by the MTII and Hxxx series...

Really it only relies on the controller chip in the adapter being recognized as CF in whatever you are putting it in, the SD will need to work well with the adapter.  A review of one of the cards, I don't have the link now, showed the same transfer rate using a SD card in the adapter as a regular CF card with similar transfer speed capabilities.

Insides of one adapter:

I'd still love to see a mod that'd allow people to swap out SD cards without disassembling the unit... but I sure aint holding my breathe for that one!

Good find, looks sweet!
