Title: Where to buy Bulk Cable? (n00b)
Post by: rsimms3 on July 24, 2006, 07:20:02 PM
So I want to start making some cables, specifically some mini XLR extensions.  Recommend me a good place to buy cable and what size that will fit properly into the mini XLR connectors.  I would rather buy some cable and start learning how to make cables, practice soldering, etc. than just buy some cables from other folks.   Can't learn if I don't try.  Thanks.

I'm pretty much in your same boat and I found markertek.com to be very cheap.  Canare Star Quad mic cable is $0.39/ft.  I think the mini xlrs TA3M/F are $6-7 apiece.

For mini-xlr connectors you'll probably want something much smaller like belden 1804a. It isn't widely available.  We've got a recent thread here with supplier info. Once in a while there are TSers who have extra.  Covering it with 1/8" techflex does a lot to toughen it up and prevent tangles without making it too big.

Agreed - even the smaller diameter Canare Mini Star Quad is a tough fit in Mini-XLRs.

I have some of the Belden 1804a available.  $1 a foot + shipping.  I have about a hundred feet available.

Do you mind telling me your source for Belden 1804a?  In particular, if I buy a large quantity (500 or 1000') how much can I save?  I'm not looking to become a reseller (none of us are, right?) but I'm just curious.

Thanks,
  Richard

I got mine from fozzy.  I bought 130 feet and only used 30 of it.  the rest has been sitting on my desk for a couple of months.

canare mini star-quad is not the way to go w/ taXf connectors,

They Handle cable up to 2.92mm (.115") O.D, you can cut the strain relief to allow for larger cable but it is not advised (from experience, not the documentation)

Belden 1804a falls into this category,

what else is out there for these?

Van den Hul's 'The Orchid' cable is 2.9 mm.  It's not available off the spool, but Van den Hul would likely make them on request.

If people want it, I can get a 500' spool of it. My distributer has it in stock.
It'll end up being $1/ft. plus a few bucks for UPS/PayPal.

I'd need to get a few good size orders to make it worthwhile though....I don't want to sell 50' of it and be stuck with 450' extra.

FWIW, I just called FullCompass and got a quote of $106 for 100' spool, but they have to order it.  So, if enough of us need a reasonable amount of this stuff, rokpunk's price is solid and it sounds like he's more reliable.

I've made mic wires with Gotham GAC 3

http://www.gotham.ch/gac/datsheet/gac_3.htm

Approx $40.0 for 100 feet....cheaper by the spool.

Call lewis at 404.840.0070

I used these wires to record the SCI in Flagstaff show, if ya wanna hear 'em with KM  184s > 722.

Hey, you don't happen to have any of those wires left over, do you?

That would be perfect for my AKG actives (three wires for, +60V, audio, and +9V, respectively).

This stuff with a diameter of .092" is certainly small enough, but does it eat ass?  And does anyone want to explain the difference between quad cable and other (like this one)?
