Title: 'Daisy Chaining' Matthews Telescopic Baby Stand Extension?
Post by: djphrayz on April 08, 2012, 10:12:19 PM
I am considering buying two of these guys and hooking them together to support a pair of AT-4031s:

Matthews Telescopic Baby Stand Extension - 18 - 54"  (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/33185-REG/Matthews_429499_Telescopic_Baby_Stand_Extension.html)

This would be a cost effective solution to clamping to my seat arm (with a superclamp? at Jones Beach, SPAC) and getting the height I want, while fitting in my small backpack.  Will this be a winner?  Or will it be a bit precarious?

Would they require an adapter to attach together?

Suggestions?

i double up the mathews pole with a manfrotto 30'' +/- extension pole using a 5/8" F<>F adapter. it has only carried the weight of a nak 300 pair, or more recently smaller senn 8040. i am always concerned about height / weight being supported only by the super clamp. if i can, i always tie off at some point on the extension - though not possible in your application of seat clamping. sometimes a little prayer that fools stay away can help. that said, there is nothing i like better than having 6 - 8 feet packing in a collapsed baby stand extension size.

Like Busdriver I've run Matthews>Manfrotto 099B, though when I have done it I was using a tripod base and the whole thing was taped to the side of an SBD cage.  I've done that with Schoeps with bodies, and DPAs.

I'd be a little worried about the ability of the Matthews to carry that load properly.  IMO that pole is not that sturdy and the screws can break (one of mine completely broke; I just don't use that section of the pole. I believe others have reported negative results as well.

Impact makes a little extension pole that is similar in size but sturdier, and combined with an 099B could still do the trick.

A link to the Impact would be awesome. Like I said in the other thread, one of my rings on the Matthews cracked last night.  :banging head:

I don't know if this is the one acidjack is referring to but it is a short Impact extension (complete with folding base)

Thx flipp, that is the one.

FWIW, the impact base is not quite as well made as the Manfrotto one that it is cloning.  But the extension pole is quite solid.

ditto on the backlight stand. that is the 2 piece extension i use with the telescopic baby, only mine is the manfrotto unit. the backlight stand, 3 piece folding base and 2 part extension is the ideal compact stage mic stand.

give credit where it's due ... i was tipped to this combo by ted gak's ultimate extension pole thread a year or so ago ....  it just took awhile to find the 5/8" F><F adapter. i'm bad on links, but it is in the B&H light stand fittings page, a manfrotto product, but it didn't turn up in a search - just keep scanning the list

How are you connecting the Super Clamp and the Mathews extender? I just got the Mathews extension. I've been warned to be gentle with the latches.
