Topic: Ripping DVD-A with Foobar

Looking around on the net it seems that this is possible, if not as straightforward as cd-ripping.

So far I've installed three new components: foo-ac3, foo_input-dts and foo_input_dvda. But Foobar will not fully open the discs - if I drag and drop them in I just get a list of the video files and couple of the bonus MP3s rather than the full list of hi-res and 5.1 audio.

One webpage I found suggested ripping the tracks with DVD Decrypter first and then using Foobar to convert them to FLAC. I can get all the audio I want as .vob files but cannot seem to get Foobar to recognize or convert them.

What am I missing here?

What are you trying to rip?

For stuff like this I use the "download without guilt" method. You own it...no harm in downloading someone else's rip.

The recent Nick Cave reissues.

I think the problem might be that they are not DVD-As as such but DVD-v with LPCM audio track within - hence the extracted files are .vob rather than .aob and therefore not recognized by Foobar.

I guess I could download them if I can find them somewhere. Or just rip the CD audio...

If you come across an actual DVD-Video disc (rare nowadays), I have found that DVDAE does not work, despite what it says.

Foobar2000 will also not rip DVD-Audio, but is able to play it with the input_dvda component.

The only tool I have reliably ripped DVD-A discs with is DVDAExplorer.  DVD-A has a different encryption scheme which DVDAExplorer is able to deal with.  (Yes, that means this tool is a bit  )

It worked great for my Beatles Love DVD-A.  If the disc has multiple mixes (many have both stereo and surround mixes), it allows you to choose which one to extract.

I can't believe how tricksy this is - I'd just assumed that Foobar could do it in a couple of clicks...

You can extract .wav files from DVD-A discs in Wavelab.

DVD Audio Explorer is for DVD-Audio ONLY, but nothing else I've ever tried is able to rip DVD-A.  I don't have Wavelab so never tried that one.

BTW, the reason this is so difficult is because every effort is made by the manufacturers to prevent you ripping these discs.

I can really see this ending in me just ripping the 44.1/16 discs...

another thought -- rip the dvd-v to mkv using makemkv, you can specify in makemkv which audio track(s) you want the mkv to contain.  Then, open the mkv in foobar2000 and see how it plays -- the mkv should retain the dvd chapters and foobar2000 can be used to extract/convert the audio to wav/flac/etc.  If the chapters don't split how you want, you could extract to one big file in foobar and open the wav/flac in cdwav, etc. to track/crop accordingly.

Thanks for the further replies - I'll look into the suggestions and see if they improve my current workflow: extract using DVD Decryptor to LPCM .vob files and then use Pazera free audio extractor to covert to FLAC. And then manually rename and tag all the files with Foobar

Be aware that most if not all commercially-made DVD-A discs are "watermarked".  This means that the ripped files may play back fine on your computer, but if you then author a new DVD-A disc with those files the audio will cut out after 30 seconds.  Previously I had thought there was no way around this, but I just found the guide below.  Please note that I have never tried this method and cannot vouch for it:

Really pleased to hear that the Doors box will be rippable with Foobar. Not listened to it for a while but I think there are different mixes on the CDs and DVDs in that box.

The watermarking shouldn't be an issue for me but it's good to know about - thanks for the workaround.
