Topic: anyone ever use sony soundforge7.0 to record live onto a lappy?

just wondering, i have a new laptop and want to be able to use it as a second deck.  i already have Soundforge7.0 and love it, but never used it in this manner.  anyone try it yet?

ive recorded cassette tapes into soundforge but never a live show.  Seemed to work out ok.  I had a pos computer at the time so I could only have the computer record...even surfing the internet while recording would cause drop outs.  Since you have a new computer I think it will work just fine.  You might want to get a little better soundcard then what is built into the computer.  Perhaps one of those USB cards with an optical i/o

Thanks, +t.  i do use it all the time for my post recording work.  i guess with a healthy new lappy and the edirol ua-1d i do have that has both coax and opti in (usb interface) i should be fine.  guess the only way to know is try right. 

i figured if someone has already tried it and failed it would save me time.

jim, stay away from the ua-1d, i owned one briefly years ago and its NOT BIT-PERFECT, i had pops/clicks on my desktop even optimized for recording, spend the $$ on a vx pocket v2(there are many in the YS for under 200) and do it right

or get a firewire audiophile or something cheaper, but STAY AWAY from the UA-1D

There is a PCMCIA card that is made by creative that has optical in and out for about $100.  Ive never used it but if I was going to do some laptop recording I might look into getting one.  It was over by the sound card/video card section at best buy.

since the audiophile 24/96 is only for a desktop, id maybe opt for the firewire audiphile, can be easily used w/ a laptop and proven bit-perfect

if you dont have any firewire slots, you can cheaply buy a firewire card as well

I've only recorded to a laptop once in Sound Forge using USB (Mini-Me > USB > SF). Since we did it in 24 bit, we didn't realize that we'd be going over the 2GB limit that it has and we got an error saying the file was too large. Our only option was to force a shutdown and rescue the file and then open with WaveLab.

I'd definitely recommend something like CD Wave or WaveLab if you know you're going to go over the 2GB limit.
