Maggies ?
« on: January 02, 2008, 05:11:21 PM »
any of you local folk want to try out a pair of MMGs ?
you'll need to be able to drive a 4ohm load.

I picked up a pair that I now dont need.  figured i'd spread em' around before I sell them.  They have a couple stops in NH first though.

Nick -  I listened to Maggies a lot when I was looking at some new speakers and am familiar with them.  I am curious why it is that you are selling them.  Are you moving on to some killer speakers?

Oh, dont get me wrong.  I love maggies.
in fact, I was *blown away* by these silly MMGs in my room.  I've never run them with good quality amplification behind them before.  I think I was running a B&K ST140 when I last had maggies.

but they sang in my living room last night !
wicked sound stage and depth.  typical flat speaker 3-d sounding presentation.
and surprisingly, I found the "sweet spot" larger w/the maggies than w/the Logans.  that surprised me.
the Logas are clearer sounding, as they should be.  but these maggies were very, very nice sounding and I can't believe how deep they go.  I wasn't using a sub w/them and they sound super fat.

So much so, that I believe I'm going to seek out a pair of 1.6QRs.

Yesterday i brought the MMGs down to Janka's house for a spin in his listening room, which is about the perfect size for these speakers.
we replaced his VSA vr4jr's (seriously outclassing the maggies).

yet...surprisingly, they held their own in many regards.
Love that maggie presentation.  one of those things that sort of grows on you.  you sit down and BANG...., the music is so big and broad, almost tangible.
some things just sound so right!  One some of the tracks we listened to with horns it was as though you could feel / hear the reed vibrating in the instrument.  I guess thats the "blat" sound that many speakers just cant get right.  It was instantly clear.

of course, the 4jrs offer TONZ of bass.  they are a little overkill in the sized room they are in, but you get used to that quickly too, and miss it terribly when its gone.
the MMGs certainly need a sub to get that impact, but they never cease to amaze me.

they have to be the best thing in entry level hi-fi.
$550 brand new, 100% money back guarantee, and they will smoke just about anything out there in their price range and even give way more expensive speakers a bitch slap in what "value' is.
they sound good.  they look cool.  they have a special magic to them.
I once said that I'd be a maggie fan forever.  then I started falling in love with huge bass output, but now i'm being lulled back into the maggie scene.

that said, I'm selling my big logans, these MMGs...and getting some 1.6qrs.

Janka should chime in w/his thoughts so that you guys can judge how fluffy/FOS I am.

I'll fluff the MMGs.  I have a pair and really like them.  I run them off a Denon 2 channel AMP and the do need some juice, but they sound fantastic.

Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.

For a low cost entry level speaker they sound nice. They do image nicely and for the money are a good value. I thought the things we listened to with piano and organ were lifeless and dull in comparision to the vsa's. No virbrato or weight to the instrument. Horns sounded decent but I wasn't hearing any reeds vibrating. The comment I made on the horns was the valve smacking sound on the sax was pleasing. The lack of deep bass is something I couldn't live with for long. All in all I wouldn't even consider dumping the vsa's and pocketing the $1700 difference unless I wanted to start watching TV more at night. All in my humble opinion of course.

Nick who'd ever suspect you of fluffing gear. ;)
