Yup, sure can.  You don't even interrupt the chain that way.

Doh!  Yes, Bean and Brian are correct. (Thanks for keeping me honest, guys.)  I was thinking that you were asking if you could go optical in and get both optical and coax out. (You can do that.)

However, if you go coax in, you get a solid optical out, but a weak coax signal out.  The weak coax signal is too weak to be properly detected by most decks.

This is one case where the CO2 has the ODL-276 beat.  With the CO2, you can go either coax or optical in and get both coax and optical out.  However, most people think that the CO2 is not bit-perfect, so it would be hard to get a spot in the patcher's daisy-chain.

never tried it, but the instructions say that you can do coax>optical AND optical>coax simultaneously, but you cant run optical>coax+optical, or coax>optical+coax make sense

so you COULD NOT run a COAX in>optical+coax out like a splitter, you HAVE TO run a spliter before the coax input because you can ONLY pass an optical output that way

OK, just for clarification, from one that has owned both units, and still owns the ODL-276:

The Midiman CO2 is a DFC (digital format convertor) WITH pass-thru capability. 

The ODL-276 is a DFC WITHOUT pass-thru capability.  It only converts one to the other.

Yes, the CO2 does have the 276 beat in this respect, but since my CO2 gave me drop out within the first 5 minutes of me using it, it was garbage.  The Midiman CO2 has been known to have problems related to dropped samples, etc.

In a situation where you need a coax pass-thru, run a coax splitter in front of the ODL, and run all the coax behind you from there.  Then run the other coax to your 276 and convert to your optical needs.

pulling a big old brain fart moment right now, but can you explain that statement for me, I am having a hard time picturing this. So lets say, I am patching from a da-p1 using a coax,,, that cable would then run >>>>>? can finish this is statement through,,, with me being able to get to the ODL > jb3 and still be able to offer someone a dig coax out for patching?

Dang it, Bean! You're keeping me honest twice in one day!  I found out that my ODL-276 had a solder short between pins 9 and 10 of the hex inverter used in that design.  Now that I've cleared that solder short, the optical in no longer is transmitted on the optical out.  I've revised the schematic I drew up for the ODL-276 to show how it's designed to be built:

Hopefully I can figure out how to modify it so that it can be used to go either coax in or optical in > both optical out and coax out at the same time. That way I can provide a coax pass through and send an optical tap to my NJB3, just like housermix wants to do.

Dang! The thing worked better for my purposes when it was still broken.  (Like I said on another thread, the workmanship on this thing was terrible.  There were lots of cold solder joints and they hadn't cleaned the flux off the board.)
