I use both Whirlwind and Switchcraft versions of these all the time.
markertek has the switchcraft:

and they have the Tec Nec ones that are a bit cheaper. Never used them, but I'm sure they would be alright.

Whirlwind/Switchcraft...whatever...they are all the same.
I prefer to build my own gay cables (M->M, F->F) because I don't like the strain the barrel connectors put on XLR jacks.

Agreed.
If I don't have a gay cable, I'll usually stick a straight jumper on the end of the barrel so that it doesn't have to stress out the jack.

Strain on which jacks, the cables, or the soundboard jacks?

on the board and on my snakes. what i *really* don't like is sticking a barrel into a snake, because, in my case, the return channels that are used for the mains and the front fills are the ones that need to be turned around. if those get kicked by some drunk musician on stage, there goes the front of house sound. i spray painted some xlr connectors hot pink and made turn around cables with them just for this reason...pink so that i can easily find them in a pile of stage spaghetti.
