How to tape Charlie Hunter Trio??????
« on: August 07, 2005, 04:13:25 AM »
The Charlie Hunter Trio is comming to my city next month and from what I've read they seem to be open taping.  According to the flyer I saw they are playing in a park where there is no stage of any kind so I'm not really sure how they will configure the area.  Even though it's open taping would I be smart to just wear my rig anyway since I have absolutely no idea how the show is going to sound or what the acoustics will be like?  I am thinking that if I bring a stand and set it up in a crappy spot it will be nearly impossible to move without thrashing my recording so maybe having some freedom to move around would be a good idea.  Any suggestions?

I recommend running x,y from the stage lip. ooops, looks like no stage lip. In that case I'd bring a short stand and put it where the lip would be.

agreed, run a wide XY of about 110 degrees or so, or a tiny DIN, w/ out the 7-8inch spacing, just run at about 3-4inches, still gives great seperation too

I like ORTF with them. However, set up L or R of center based on how the band is. It's been Drums, CH, sax/organ (from L>R) the most recent time I saw them. I had to go a bit to the right so the drums didn't overpower everything.

Ok I don't have a short stand and am running 4061s so where do I get a stand that can accomodate those mics?

I have a jecklin disc rig, but mine uses a boom so I guess I could run it pretty low.  I followed Mokes instructions but with a memory foam material.  how are you supposed to mount the 4061s to it though because I don't have any gator clips?

Try gaffer's tape for mounting those mics. I don't know about how the adhesive will work for the foam, so you may want to try this at home to make sure it holds for 3-4 hours. I bet you could also rig a mic "mount" from those paper clippy things (usually black with silver squeezable parts to open the clip).

The most crafty mount I have seen was constructed out of those triangular erasers. worked very well according to the builder.
