Title: Tascam writing blank files? (DR-40D and DR-60D)
Post by: StarkRavingCalm on September 25, 2015, 10:08:48 AM
Taped at a festival recently running more than one rig.
During one bands set, the DR-60D wrote a blank file, luckily the DR-40D recorded successfully and I was able to get something.
During the next set, the DR-40D did the same thing while the DR-60D actually recorded music.

Both had been running all day with no other issues
Both are at latest firmware v1.21 (DR-60D) and v2.0 (DR-40D)

Had anyone had this happen before?
Could have been a battery issue? I didn't take note of when I changed them.

100% blank? I had an issue with my DR-05 where the file was blank except the very start and end. Turned out to be an issue with the memory card after being in the heat for so long (was in the car all day in the summer).  Card would definitely be the first thing I would check.

It's strange that it happened once and then was fine. I would try to replicate it

100% blank

Wasn't a hot day and did have decent amount of shade most of the time.
Good point on the card. I had swapped them out at one point also, but just like the batteries, I didn't note when I did.

Did you notice if the meters were moving? Was the time moving? I know at a festival, sometimes there is a lot of running around. I was thinking maybe Phantom was off or the deck was still in pause mode.

full activity meter-wise, phantom had been on all day, the unit (s) each wrote a blank file so they were not in pause mode

Try opening the file in CD Wave Editor (a very forgiving program).   My SD633 does stereo as a two-track poly wave, and Wavelab 6 can't see anything there, looks like it recorded nothing.  CD Wave sees a header that says a zero bit file but lets you opt to ignore it, opens it fine, then saves in a format Wavelab can handle.  I don't know if your problem is something similar, but it is worth a shot.
